Pros and cons
According to our plant experts
+Pro: Non-toxic to cats and dogs.
+Pro: Narrow leaves with silvery green stripes and a wine-red underside.
+Pro: Does well in partial shade and does not need a sunny spot.
−Con: Needs high humidity; in dry air the leaf edges turn brown.
−Con: Prefers soft water or rainwater, as tap water causes brown tips more quickly.
Plant height may vary by up to 10 cm. Height includes the nursery pot. The nursery pot may differ from the one in the photo.

The Ctenanthe oppenheimiana grows as a tall clump of narrow leaves and can reach well over a metre indoors. At XXLplant you buy it from 100 to 130 cm tall, measured including the nursery pot. That makes it a true floor plant.
Is a Ctenanthe toxic to cats and dogs?
No, the Ctenanthe oppenheimiana is not toxic to cats and dogs. That makes it a good choice if you have pets. Chewed leaves will not grow back, of course, so a spot slightly out of the way is a good idea.
Where should you put a Ctenanthe?
A Ctenanthe does well in a bright spot or in partial shade, out of direct sun. In the sun the markings fade and the leaves scorch. It likes warmth between 18 and 25 °C and high humidity.
How often should you water a Ctenanthe?
Keep the soil slightly moist and do not let it dry out. Ideally use soft water or rainwater, because limescale quickly leads to brown leaf tips. It needs a little less in winter.
Why is my Ctenanthe getting brown edges?
Brown leaf edges are usually caused by dry air, hard water or compost that has dried out too far. Don't put the plant right next to the radiator and water with rainwater or soft water. New leaves will then come through undamaged again.
How is a Ctenanthe delivered?
Your plant travels upright in its own plant box, with the leaves in a paper sleeve and the pot secured. In frosty or hot weather we add a heat pack or cold pack. Delivery usually takes 4 to 5 working days.
