Office plants for desks, meeting rooms or reception, such as fiddle leaf fig, areca palm and dragon tree. ZZ plant, snake plant and Kentia palm cope well with lower light and the occasional forgotten watering.
With heights from 30 to 260 cm there is a plant for every spot in the office. We measure height from the bottom of the pot to the tallest leaf. A handy breakdown:
Desk and windowsill: plants up to about 70 cm, such as the ZZ plant or aloe vera.
Next to a workstation or in a meeting corner: 90 to 150 cm, such as snake plant, Polyscias or Areca palm.
Reception, canteen and high-ceilinged spaces: 180 to 260 cm, such as a Kentia palm, Strelitzia augusta or Ficus lyrata tree.
Only after the real eye-catchers? Take a look at the XXL plants of 200 cm and taller. Large plants also work as a natural divider between workstations, without having to put up a wall.
Light in the workplace
Many offices have light by the windows and little light further into the room. Most plants in this collection like partial shade and do well a few metres from the window. The ZZ plant and the snake plant also manage in a darker spot. A Ficus lyrata or Strelitzia, on the other hand, wants to be close to the window. Fluorescent lighting alone is too little for most plants, so always place them where they get daylight. You will find more fig species under Ficus.
Care when nobody is around
In the office, plants are left alone at weekends and during holidays. So choose species that store water, such as the ZZ plant, snake plant, ponytail palm and aloe vera. They can go without water for quite a while. Palms and a Ficus lyrata want a more regular routine. Agree on who waters the plants, so they do not get watered twice or not at all. A large pot dries out more slowly than a small one, so one bigger plant is often easier than a row of small ones.

The ZZ plant and the snake plant are the best-known plants for a dark spot. They grow more slowly there but keep looking tidy. No plant survives without any daylight at all, so always put it somewhere that still gets some light from a window, even if that is a few metres away.
Which large plants are suitable for the office?
For a reception area or a high-ceilinged hall, the Kentia palm, Ficus lyrata and Strelitzia are popular. They grow tall, have large leaves and are not fussy. For a spot with less light, a large snake plant or ponytail palm is a strong choice. The plants in this collection go up to 260 cm tall.
How often should you water office plants?
That varies by species. Succulent-type plants such as the ZZ plant, snake plant and aloe vera are fine with once every two to three weeks. Palms and a Ficus lyrata want water more often, as soon as the top few centimetres of soil are dry. Check the soil with your finger before watering.
Can office plants handle air conditioning and dry air?
Dry air from heating or air conditioning can cause brown leaf tips, especially on palms. Do not place plants directly in the airflow of an air conditioner or above a radiator. Species with thick or leathery leaves, such as the ZZ plant, snake plant and Ficus elastica, are least affected.
How much does a large office plant cost?
At XXLplant office plants cost from €24.95 for a small plant to €399.95 for a large specimen. The price depends on the species, the height and the pot size. You pick a decorative pot separately. Delivery within the Netherlands is free from €99.
