When should you plant fruit plants?
Potted fruit plants can be planted almost all year, as long as the ground is not frozen. Autumn and early spring are best, because the soil is moist and the plant can settle its roots before the growing season.
Which fruit plants can grow in a pot?
Blueberry, gooseberry and fig grow well in a large pot with a drainage hole. Use ericaceous compost for the blueberry. Raspberries and blackberries need more room and prefer open ground along a fence.
What soil does a blueberry need?
The blueberry needs acid, humus-rich soil that stays moist. It often struggles in ordinary garden soil. Mix ericaceous compost into the planting hole, or grow the shrub in a pot filled with it.
Is a fig tree hardy?
A fig tree can stay outdoors in milder areas in a sunny, sheltered spot, for example against a south-facing wall. Young plants and figs in pots are more sensitive. Protect them during hard frost or move the pot to a frost-free place.
