Frequently asked questions
When should you plant allium bulbs?
Allium bulbs are planted in autumn, from October to mid-December, just like tulips and daffodils. The bulbs grow roots in autumn and then flower in May, June or July, depending on the variety.
How deep should you plant allium bulbs?
A rule of thumb is two to three times the height of the bulb. Large alliums such as Gladiator go about 15 to 20 centimetres deep, small varieties such as the drumstick allium about 8 to 10 centimetres. Choose a sunny spot where the soil does not stay wet.
Does allium come back every year?
Most alliums are hardy and flower for years in the same spot, especially in free-draining soil. In wet, heavy soil the bulbs can rot. Let the foliage die back after flowering before you remove it.
Is allium toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes, allium belongs to the onion family and is toxic to cats and dogs, both the bulb and the leaves. Keep the bulbs out of reach until you plant them and keep an eye on pets that like to dig.
