Perennials

Many perennials die back above ground in winter and sprout again in spring. With just a few varieties you get months of flowers. Salvia nemorosa starts in May, Geranium 'Rozanne' and catmint flower all summer, coneflower and giant hyssop follow in July and asters carry on into October. Many of these plants attract bees and butterflies. Lavender, catmint and salvia cope well with drought and like a sunny spot.

Ordering perennials online is simple: you choose the number of plants for each variety. If you only know the size of your border, enter the area and the page works out per m² how many plants you need. We turn that into the best-value combination of packs. Plant in groups of the same variety for a calmer look than single plants dotted about.

For structure in the border, combine perennials with ornamental grasses. Underneath and in between, ground cover plants keep the soil covered.

Frequently asked questions

What are perennials?
Perennials are hardy, non-woody plants that live for several years. In many varieties the part above ground dies back in winter, after which the plant sprouts again in spring. They are mainly used in borders.
When should you plant perennials?
Potted perennials can be planted as long as the ground is not frozen or bone dry. Spring and early autumn are best, because the soil is then warm and moist. Water well during the first weeks after planting.
How many perennials do you need per m²?
That depends on how wide a variety grows. Low, compact plants go closer together than large, spreading ones. On the product page you enter the area and see for each variety how many plants you need.
Which perennials flower for a long time?
Geranium 'Rozanne', catmint and giant hyssop flower for months. Salvia nemorosa flowers from May and gives a second flush if you cut it back after the first. Asters flower late in the season, from August into October.
