+Pro: Tolerates drought and full sun on a sunny patio well.
−Con: Needs at least six hours of direct sun a day; indoors that only works in front of a sunny window.

All about
The Olive tree dossier
Olea europaea
The olive tree is the symbol of the Mediterranean, where specimens hundreds of years old still bear fruit. Its silver-gray leaves and gnarled trunk bring that Mediterranean feeling straight to your garden or terrace.
Olive trees are tough survivors: they tolerate heat, wind and drought better than almost any other tree.

Placement and light
An olive tree belongs outside: choose the sunniest, most sheltered spot in your garden or terrace, preferably south-facing. The more sun, the better. Inside is only a temporary stay; there it structurally gets too little light.
In winter, an olive tree in the open ground can withstand light frost. The roots are more vulnerable in a pot: protect the pot during severe frost or store it in a cool and light place.
Water and feeding
In the open ground, an olive tree can largely manage itself. In a pot, water regularly in the summer as soon as the top centimeters are dry; in winter only very occasionally. Drainage is crucial: the roots should never be in water.
Provide Mediterranean plant food or olive food once a month from April to August.
Is something wrong with your Olive tree?
Yellow, falling leaves almost always indicate too much water or too little light. Brown leaf tips indicate prolonged drought. Some leaf loss after moving or in the autumn is normal; the tree recovers in the spring. Check occasionally for scale on branches and undersides of leaves.
Repot an olive tree in the spring, about every two to three years. Use well-drained soil, for example mixed with sand or gravel, and a pot with ample drainage. The root ball may be relatively tight; that doesn't slow him down.
Toxic to pets?
The olive tree is not poisonous to cats and dogs. Leaves and branches pose no risk, and a fallen olive is at best a nasty surprise. A worry-free choice for a garden with pets.
Olive trees grow slowly and that is their charm: every centimeter of trunk is one of years. Prune in late spring to keep the model in shape. Our XXL olive trees have built up their characteristic trunk for decades.
Prune an olive tree in spring, once the hard frosts are over. Remove dead branches and branches growing inwards, so light and air can get into the crown. Heavy pruning is not needed; an olive tree grows slowly and keeps its shape for a long time.
How big does an olive tree get?
An olive tree grows slowly, especially in a pot, so it keeps roughly the same shape for years. At XXLplant you buy olive trees from 100 to 270 cm tall, so you choose the size you want straight away. We measure the height including the nursery pot.
Which olive tree should you choose: standard, bush or bonsai?
A standard olive tree has a straight trunk with a round crown and fits nicely beside a front door or in a narrow corner. A bush is fully branched from the ground up and works as a green screen or eye-catcher in a border. The bonsai and Lorc forms have a thick trunk full of character and are meant as a showpiece on the patio or in the garden.
Can an olive tree be kept indoors?
It can, but only in a very bright spot with at least six hours of direct sunlight, for example in front of a large south-facing window. Indoors, water less than outdoors: usually once a week in summer and every two to three weeks in winter. Don't mist the leaves, as an olive tree likes dry air.
Can an olive tree stay outdoors in winter?
An olive tree can tolerate cold down to about -10 °C. In a pot the roots freeze more quickly, so protect the pot and crown in hard frost, for example with horticultural fleece and an insulating layer around the pot. Outdoors in winter, only water during dry spells and never when it is freezing.
How often should you water an olive tree?
Outdoors in summer, water an olive tree two to three times a week; indoors usually once a week. Keep the soil lightly moist but avoid waterlogging: a pot with good drainage prevents root rot. In winter, water much less.
How is an olive tree delivered?
An olive tree travels upright in its own plant box, with the crown in a paper sleeve and the pot firmly secured. The largest trees go with a specialist carrier, otherwise with PostNL or DHL. In frost or heat we add a heat pack or cold pack.
