The Ficus dossier

Ficus

Ficuses grow in the tropics of Asia, Africa and Australia, from dense rainforests to open plains. The best-known houseplants from the family are the Ficus lyrata with its large violin-shaped leaves, the fine-leaved Ficus benjamina and the sturdy Ficus elastica.

What they share: glossy foliage, tree-like growth and a look that makes any room more mature.

Placement and light

Give a Ficus a light spot without bright afternoon sun; ochtend- of avondzon is prima. Belangrijk om te weten: een Ficus is honkvast. Choose a permanent spot and move it as little as possible, because moving and drafts can cause it to drop leaves.

Keep the temperature above 15 degrees and do not place it directly above a warm radiator.

Water and feeding

Water about once a week in summer and once every ten to fourteen days in winter. Let the top centimeters of soil dry first. Be cautious: too much water is the most common mistake with a Ficus.

Provide plant food every two weeks from March to September and wipe large leaves occasionally with a damp cloth.

Is something wrong with your Ficus?

In Ficus, leaf loss is usually a response to change: a move, a draft or a darker place. Give him time, he almost always recovers. Yellow leaves indicate too much water, brown edges indicate dry air. Sticky leaves may indicate scale or mealybug.

Repotting and pot choice

Repot a Ficus every two to three years in the spring, in a pot that is about twenty percent wider. Use light potting soil and a sturdy pot: large specimens are top heavy. Wear gloves because of the milky juice. You can find the matching decorative pots directly on this page.

Toxic to pets?

The milky sap of the Ficus is slightly poisonous to cats and dogs and can irritate the mouth and stomach when chewed. The sap can also be sensitive on the skin. Place the plant out of reach of nibbling pets or choose an animal-friendly alternative.

Growth and size

With enough light, a Ficus grows steadily and can grow into a real indoor tree indoors. Pruning is allowed throughout the spring and keeps the shape compact. Our XXL specimens have already been grown as full-fledged trees.

How big does a Ficus lyrata get indoors?
Indoors a Ficus lyrata can grow to around 2 to 3 metres, depending on light and pot space. At XXLplant you can buy it from 75 to 270 cm tall, measured including the nursery pot. That way you choose the size that suits your space straight away, without waiting years.
Should I choose a Ficus lyrata as a standard, branched or as a bush?
A standard Ficus lyrata has a bare trunk with a crown of leaves on top and suits a spot next to a sofa or a narrow corner. A branched Ficus lyrata is wider and fuller, and a bush has leaves from the pot upwards and works well in a lower spot. So look mainly at how much width you have.
Where is the best place for a Ficus lyrata?
A Ficus lyrata wants a bright spot with plenty of indirect light, for example by an east- or west-facing window. Harsh midday sun can scorch the leaves. Choose a fixed spot away from draughts and radiators, as it doesn't like being moved.
How often should you water a Ficus lyrata?
Only water your Ficus lyrata once the top layer of soil has dried out slightly, in summer usually about once a week. Keep the soil lightly moist but not wet and do not leave water standing in the decorative pot. In winter it needs noticeably less.
Is a Ficus lyrata toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes, a Ficus lyrata is mildly toxic to cats and dogs. The white milky sap can irritate the mouth and stomach, and in sensitive people the skin too. Keep it out of reach of pets that like to chew plants.
Why does my Ficus lyrata get brown spots or lose leaves after delivery?
A Ficus lyrata reacts to a new spot with less light and a different temperature, so a few dropped leaves in the first weeks are normal. Brown spots are often caused by too much water, cold draughts or a spot that is too dark. Give it plenty of light, let the soil dry out between waterings and avoid moving it around.
How is a Ficus lyrata delivered?
Your Ficus lyrata travels upright in its own plant box, with the crown in a paper sleeve and the pot secured. The largest plants go with a specialist carrier, otherwise with PostNL or DHL, and in frost or heat we add a heat pack or cold pack. Delivery usually takes 4 to 5 working days.
