The Kentia palm dossier

Howea forsteriana

The Kentia palm comes from Lord Howe Island, a small island off the coast of Australia. There it slowly grows into a graceful palm several meters high. Since the nineteenth century it has been the salon palm: elegant, calm and very strong.

Its soft, arching leaves immediately give any room a green, serene appearance.

Placement and light

The Kentia is one of the few palms that also does well in a less bright spot. A spot with light to partial shade, without direct afternoon sun, is ideal; it burns the leaf. A north window or a place further from the window is also fine.

Keep the temperature above 12 degrees and avoid cold drafts. Turn the plant occasionally for a nice, full shape.

Water and feeding

Water about once a week in summer and once every ten to fourteen days in winter. The root ball is allowed to dry slightly in between; the Kentia would rather be a little too dry than too wet. Spray the leaves occasionally, especially in winter with dry heating air.

Provide palm food or general plant food once a month during the growing season.

Is something wrong with your Kentia palm?

Brown leaf tips indicate dry air or too little water. Yellow leaves usually indicate too much water or too much direct sunlight. It is normal that the bottom leaf slowly dies: this is how the palm renews itself. Spider mites can appear in dry air.

Repotting and pot choice

The Kentia grows slowly and only needs to be repotted once every three to four years. Its roots are sensitive: keep the root ball intact as much as possible and repot carefully in the spring. Choose a pot that is slightly larger and pay attention to good drainage. You can find the matching decorative pots directly on this page.

Toxic to pets?

Good news for pet owners: the Kentia palm is not poisonous to cats and dogs. A nibbling cat will at most leave a bad taste. This makes this one of the most beautiful animal-friendly plants in the house.

Growth and size

The Kentia is a deliberately slow grower: a few new leaves per year. A large specimen is therefore many years old. Our XXL Kentias immediately give your interior that mature, serene palm feeling that you would otherwise wait ten years for.
