What is Boho
Boho is an interior style that revolves around freedom, layering, and a cozy, casual atmosphere. The style, also known as bohemian chic, combines natural materials, macrame, woven baskets, and an abundance of greenery. Plants are not just an accent here but the heart of the interior: they make a space full, warm, and vibrant.
The atmosphere is rich and inviting. You see rugs layered over each other, cushions in different patterns, rattan and jute, and greenery at every height. Nothing is sleek or symmetrical; everything feels as if it grew organically. It's an interior that invites you to linger, with the loose, collected appearance of someone who brings something beautiful from everywhere.
In this style guide, we show which plants and plant types suit the boho style, from hanging plants and climbers to sculptural cacti, full foliage plants, and airy palms. We share our top 5 from the collection and provide concrete styling tips, so you know how to build the layered green look and which pitfalls to avoid.

Characteristics of the Boho style
The building blocks that make a Boho interior recognizable.
1
Layers and texture
Boho is about layering. You stack rugs, cushions, baskets and plants on top of each other into a rich, cosy whole. No sleek lines, but a build-up that feels as if it grew by itself and keeps inviting a closer look.
2
Woven and natural materials
Macramé, rattan, jute and woven baskets form the backbone of the style. These artisanal, natural materials add warmth and character. Plants in a woven basket or macramé hanger fit right in.
3
Abundance of green and trailing plants
With boho it is allowed to be full. Trailing plants cascading down, climbers creeping over a trellis and full foliage plants on the floor together make a green oasis. The more layers of green, the more complete the look.
Which plants suit Boho
Trailing plants and climbers
Hoogte, 20 to 150 cm
Trailing plants and climbers give the style movement. From a macramé hanger or high shelf they cascade gracefully and fill the space above eye level, exactly what boho calls for.
Sculptural cacti and succulents
Hoogte, 40 to 180 cm
A cactus or sturdy succulent adds a graphic, tough accent among all the soft textiles. Its sleek shape creates contrast and gives the layered boho look a resting point.
Volle bladplanten
Hoogte, 90 to 190 cm
Full, lush foliage plants such as Polyscias and Yucca Elephantipes fill a corner with green. Their rich leaf structure suits the style's abundant, cosy character.
Palms for a jungle feel
Hoogte, 100 to 230 cm
An Areca palm or other feathered palm brings an instant jungle feel. Its airy, branching fronds add volume without becoming heavy and reinforce the free, natural mood.

The Areca palm is the bohemian classic par excellence. Its airy, feathered fronds bring an instant jungle feel and fill a corner with green without becoming heavy. At 140 cm it is an accessible size that suits almost any room.
The Polyscias Fabian has a full, layered leaf structure that suits boho's cosy character perfectly. Its dark green leaflets and branching shape add texture and depth among all the soft materials.
The Sansevieria Laurentii adds a sleek, sculptural accent among all the textiles. Its vertical leaves with yellow edges bring contrast and calm, and the plant is virtually indestructible.
The Yucca Elephantipes is a full foliage plant that fills a corner with a playful burst of green. Tough, affordable and easy to care for, a great base plant to build your boho jungle around.
The Opuntia cactus adds a tough, desert-like accent. Its graphic pad shape stands out beautifully against woven baskets and macramé and gives the layered boho look an unexpected sculptural resting point.
Styling tips for Boho
Do
Hang plants at different heights
Use macramé hangers, shelves and hooks to place plants at different levels. Playing with height fills the room right up to the ceiling and creates the layered boho look.
Do
Mix pot materials and textures
Mix woven baskets, terracotta, rattan and ceramics together. That variety in material and texture is exactly what makes boho so rich and cosy.
Do
Dare to combine many plants
Boho is allowed to be abundant. Group plants into a green corner and do not shy away from volume. The more layers of green, the more complete the look.
Don't
Vermijd strakke symmetrie
A perfectly symmetrical arrangement works against boho's free spirit. Place plants a little unevenly and playfully so the look feels natural and effortless.
Don't
Do not put everything in the same pot
A set of identical pots flattens the look. Boho thrives on variation, so mix material, colour and shape to keep the layering.
Don't
Avoid an overly minimalist arrangement
A single plant in an empty room does not suit boho. The style calls for volume and cosiness, so build a rich, full corner rather than a sparse focal point.
Frequently asked questions about Boho
Answers to the most frequently asked questions about the Boho style.
Which plants suit a boho interior?+
Boho thrives on variety. Combine trailing plants and climbers with full foliage plants such as Polyscias and Yucca Elephantipes, airy palms for a jungle feel and a sculptural cactus or succulent for contrast. The more layers of green, the stronger the boho feel.
How many plants do I need for a boho look?+
More than with most styles. Boho is about abundance, so think groups of three to five plants per corner, topped up with trailing plants at height. Start with a few statement plants and build the look layer by layer.
Which pots suit a boho interior?+
Woven baskets, rattan, jute, terracotta and macramé hangers are the natural choice. Mix the materials rather than picking a uniform set. It is precisely that variation in texture that makes boho so rich.
Are trailing plants difficult to care for?+
Not bad at all. Most trailing plants are actually quite easy. Bear in mind that they hang up high, so check the soil regularly and take the plant down now and then to water it evenly.
How do I combine plants with macramé and baskets?+
Put full foliage plants in a woven basket on the floor and hang lighter plants in a macramé hanger above. Working at different heights creates the layered build-up that is typical of boho.
Does a cactus suit a boho interior?+
Absolutely. A sculptural cactus or succulent provides welcome contrast among all the soft textiles. Its sleek, graphic shape acts as a resting point and keeps the layered look balanced.
Does the boho style work in a small space too?+
Yes, boho works in a small space too. Use the height by hanging plants and placing them on shelves so the floor stays clear. A few full plants and woven materials already bring the mood in.
