1. Size and appearance
The biggest difference between the two species is their size.
Strelitzia Nicolai: the largest
The Nicolai is the larger of the two. This plant can grow to be 2 to sometimes even 3 meters tall indoors. Its large banana-like leaves give it a tropical appearance. It is therefore often used as a real statement plant in a living room or office.
Strelitzia Reginae is smaller
The Reginae remains much smaller. This species usually grows to about 1 to 1.5 meters tall. This makes it a better fit for smaller living rooms or apartments.
2. Bloom and flowers
The Strelitzia is known for its distinctive flowers (bird of paradise), but not every species blooms equally easily.
Nicolai: little chance of indoor blooms
The Nicolai can produce large white and blue flowers in nature. However, this rarely happens indoors. The plant is therefore primarily purchased for its impressive leaves.

Reginae: can bloom indoors
The Reginae is famous for its orange and blue flowers that resemble a bird of paradise. With sufficient light and proper care, this species can also bloom indoors.

3. Location and care
In terms of care, the plants are very similar.
- lots of light
- a spot close to a window
- several hours of direct sunlight
- regular watering, but no wet roots
The Strelitzia Nicolai does need more space. Due to its large leaves and strong roots, it quickly outgrows its pot.
The Strelitzia Reginae is more compact and therefore slightly easier to place in smaller spaces.
4. Which Strelitzia suits your interior?
The choice mainly depends on the space you have.
Strelitzia Nicolai suitable for:
- large living rooms
- high ceilings
- offices or open spaces
- people who want a real eye-catcher
Strelitzia Reginae suitable for:
- smaller living rooms
- apartments
- people who like to see flowers on their plant
5. Growth and leaves
The Strelitzia Nicolai grows faster and develops large, broad leaves that resemble banana leaves. In a spacious living room, it can grow into a real tropical eye-catcher.
The Strelitzia Reginae grows more compactly. Its leaves are narrower and closer together. This makes the plant look calmer and fit more easily among other houseplants.
