The Strelitzia dossier

Strelitzia nicolai

The Strelitzia nicolai comes from the coastal forests of South Africa, where it grows into a tree-like plant many meters high. Its large, banana-like leaves catch plenty of sun and wind. Cracks in the leaves are completely natural: this way the plant allows the wind to pass through without being blown over.

Indoors, the Strelitzia grows into an impressive houseplant with a tropical appearance. It is not known as the bird of paradise plant for nothing.

Placement and light

The Strelitzia is a real sun worshiper: the more light, the better. Place it in the brightest spot in the house, preferably directly in front of a large window facing south or west. Too little light inhibits growth and makes the petioles limp.

Turn the plant a quarter turn regularly for even growth. Keep the temperature above 12 degrees; In summer it can also be placed outside in a sheltered position.

Water and feeding

Keep the potting soil slightly moist during the growing season and water about once or twice a week in the summer. In winter the soil may become drier in between. Avoid a layer of water at the bottom of the pot, because the roots do not like that.

Provide plant food every two weeks from March to September. Wipe the large leaves occasionally with a damp cloth so that they catch more light.

Is something wrong with your Strelitzia?

Brown edges usually indicate dry air or a water shortage, yellow leaves indicate too much water. Cracks in the leaves are normal and part of the plant. If the leaf curls lengthwise, the plant is thirsty. In dry air, spider mites can appear, recognizable by fine spider silk under the leaves.

Repotting and pot choice

Repot a young Strelitzia every two years in the spring; older specimens can be kept in the same pot for longer. The strong roots can literally deform a plastic nursery pot. Choose a sturdy pot that is about twenty percent wider and use nutritious, well-drained potting soil. You can find the matching decorative pots directly on this page.

Toxic to pets?

The Strelitzia is slightly poisonous to cats and dogs, especially the flowers and seeds. Chewing the plant can cause stomach complaints. Serious poisoning is rare, but it is best to keep the plant out of reach of nibbling pets or choose an animal-friendly alternative.
