The Citrus tree dossier

Citrus

Citrus trees originate from Southeast Asia and conquered the world via the Mediterranean Sea. Orange, lemon and mandarin bring the Mediterranean summer to your patio with their shiny leaves, fragrant blossoms and colorful fruits.

A citrus tree is a real orangery plant: outside in the sun in the summer, cool and light inside in the winter.

Placement and light

Place a citrus tree outside from May to October in a warm, sunny and sheltered spot, preferably against a south wall. Sun is the driving force behind blossoms and fruits.

Citrus is not winter hardy: hibernate it in a cool and light place, ideally between 5 and 12 degrees, for example in a conservatory, greenhouse or bright garage. A warm living room is unsuitable in winter.

Water and feeding

Water regularly in summer, as soon as the top few inches of soil are dry; on hot days this can be daily. Preferably use rainwater and ensure perfect drainage. During winter dormancy the tree drinks little.

Provide special citrus food every two weeks from March to October; it contains the extra iron and magnesium that citrus needs.

Is something wrong with your Citrus tree?

Yellow leaves in citrus often indicate an iron deficiency or soil that is too wet. Leaf fall in winter usually means: overwintering too warm and too dark. Falling fruits are partly natural; the tree keeps what it can bear. Check for scale and mealybugs, especially indoors.

Repotting and pot choice

Repot a citrus tree in early spring, every two to three years. Use special citrus or Mediterranean potting soil with excellent drainage and a pot with ample water drainage. Don't choose the pot too large; citrus blooms better with the roots slightly tighter.

Toxic to pets?

Citrus leaves and peels contain essential oils that are mildly toxic to cats and dogs. Fortunately, the smell deters most animals. Serious poisoning is rare, but do not allow pets to chew leaves or fruits.

Growth and size

A citrus tree grows moderately and is mainly concerned with flowering and setting fruit: with the right sun and nutrition you can expect blossoms and fruits every year. Prune lightly in the spring for a beautiful, open crown.
