The Philodendron dossier

Philodendron

The Philodendron grows in the rainforests of South America, where most species climb trees as climbers. His name literally means tree friend.

The family is extremely versatile: from compact shrub forms to climbers with leaves as large as a hole-in-the-wall plant.

Placement and light

A Philodendron feels at home in a bright spot without direct sun, but will also settle for partial shade. The darker the spot, the smaller the new leaf.

Keep the temperature above 15 degrees. Climbing species appreciate a moss stick; which stimulates larger leaves.

Water and feeding

Allow the top centimeters of potting soil to dry before watering again: about once a week in summer, less in winter. The Philodendron forgives a forgotten watering more easily than wet feet.

Feed every two weeks from April to September and wipe the leaves occasionally with a damp cloth.

Is something wrong with your Philodendron?

Yellow leaves indicate too much water, drooping leaves indicate thirst. Small new leaves mean too little light or nutrition. Drops on the leaf edges are harmless. Spider mites can appear in dry air, although the Philodendron is less sensitive to it than many other tropical plants.

Repotting and pot choice

Repot the Philodendron every two years in the spring in a pot that is one size larger, with airy, humus-rich potting soil. Immediately give climbers a longer moss stick. You can find the matching decorative pots directly on this page.

Toxic to pets?

The Philodendron contains calcium oxalate and is poisonous to cats and dogs. Chewing the leaf irritates the mouth and stomach. Place the plant out of reach of nibbling pets or choose an animal-friendly alternative.

Growth and size

A Philodendron grows smoothly with warmth and light; climbers visibly make progress in a season. Each new leaf grows larger as the plant climbs higher.
