How do you repot a Kentia Palm? Step-by-step plan and tips

The Kentia Palm grows slowly but eventually needs more space to stay healthy. Repotting isn't complicated, as long as you follow a few steps. This article explains how and when to repot a Kentia Palm.

When should you repot?

  • Every 2 to 3 years, or as soon as the roots completely fill the pot.
  • It is best to repot in spring, as this will help the plant recover more quickly.
  • Just bought the palm? After a few weeks, move it to a sturdy, larger pot.

Which pot and soil do you choose?

  • Choose a pot that is 20–30% larger than the current one.
  • Provide drainage holes so that excess water can drain away.
  • Use airy potting soil, possibly mixed with hydro grains.

Repotting step by step

  1. Carefully remove the Kentia Palm from its old pot. Gently tap the edges if necessary.
  2. Remove loose soil from around the roots, but leave the root ball largely intact.
  3. Place a layer of hydro grains or potsherds at the bottom of the new pot.
  4. Place the plant in the center and fill the edges with fresh soil.
  5. Press the soil lightly and give a generous splash of water.

Care after repotting

  • Place the palm in a light spot, but not in direct sunlight.
  • Keep the soil moist but not soaking wet during the first few weeks.
  • Wait 4–6 weeks before fertilizing to allow the roots to recover.
