The Monstera dossier

Monstera deliciosa

The Monstera deliciosa grows naturally in the tropical rainforests of Central and South America, where it climbs tree trunks with its aerial roots in search of light. The famous holes and splits in the leaves (called fenestration) let wind and light through to the lower foliage.

Large specimens keep that climbing character: a moss pole or support keeps the plant upright and encourages bigger leaves with more holes.

Placement and light

The Monstera prefers a bright spot without direct midday sun. Harsh direct sunlight scorches the leaves, while too little light produces small leaves without holes. A spot near an east or north facing window is ideal, or two to three metres from a south facing window.

Rotate the plant a quarter turn every few weeks so it grows evenly. Keep the temperature above 15 degrees and avoid draughts and a spot directly above a radiator.

Water and feeding

Water about once a week in spring and summer, and once every ten to fourteen days in autumn and winter. Feel first: the top three to five centimetres of soil should be dry before you water again. Slightly too dry is better than too wet, as root rot from overwatering is problem number one.

Feed with green plant fertiliser every two weeks from March to September. The Monstera appreciates somewhat higher humidity; misting is fine but usually not necessary.

Is something wrong with your Monstera?

Yellow leaves usually point to overwatering or poorly draining soil. Brown edges or tips indicate dry air or underwatering. New leaves without holes almost always mean too little light. In dry air spider mites can appear, recognisable by fine webbing on the underside of the leaves.

Repotting and pot choice

Repot a Monstera every two to three years, preferably in spring. Choose a pot with a diameter about twenty percent larger than the current nursery pot and use airy, well draining potting soil. Large specimens are top heavy: a sturdy, slightly taller decorative pot keeps the plant stable. You will find the matching pots right on this page.

Toxic to pets?

The Monstera contains calcium oxalate, which makes it mildly toxic to cats and dogs. Chewing on the leaves causes irritation of the mouth and stomach. Serious poisoning is rare, but with nibbling pets it is better to keep the plant out of reach or choose a pet friendly alternative.
