The Banana plant dossier

Musa

The banana plant grows in the tropics of Asia, where it fills entire plantations with its enormous leaves. Technically it is not a tree but a huge herb: the trunk consists of rolled petioles.

Indoors, the Musa immediately creates a holiday feeling: no plant makes a tropical statement faster.

Placement and light

The banana plant loves light and warmth: a place in front of a large window with lots of sun is ideal, preferably south-facing. In summer it can also be sheltered outside.

Keep the temperature above 15 degrees and avoid drafts. Turn the plant regularly, because it grows quickly towards the light.

Water and feeding

Those large leaves evaporate a lot: in the summer the banana plant needs water two to three times a week. Keep the soil consistently slightly moist, but avoid a layer of water at the bottom of the pot. Things can be quieter in winter.

Spray the leaves regularly and feed every two weeks from March to September. This way the leaves remain large and deep green.

Is something wrong with your Banana plant?

Brown, cracking leaf edges are part of the banana plant; in nature the wind also tears the leaf. Yellow leaves indicate too much water, drooping leaves indicate thirst. An older leaf dying is normal: a new leaf is already rolled up and ready in the heart.

Repotting and pot choice

The banana plant grows fast and can therefore use a larger pot every year or every other year in the spring. Choose a sturdy pot that is twenty percent wider and use nutritious potting soil. You can find the matching decorative pots directly on this page.

Toxic to pets?

The banana plant is completely safe for cats and dogs: the leaves and stem are not poisonous. One of the best choices for a tropical interior with pets.
