The Pachira dossier

Pachira aquatica

The Pachira aquatica grows in the swamps of Central and South America, where its base widens to store moisture. Its braided trunk and fresh palmate leaves made it world famous as a money tree, a symbol of luck and prosperity.

That thick trunk is its secret weapon: a built-in water supply.

Placement and light

The Pachira likes a light spot, but without direct midday sun. It also holds up well in a place with less light; growth is then mainly slower.

Keep the temperature above 12 degrees and avoid cold drafts. Turn the plant occasionally for an even crown.

Water and feeding

Thanks to its water-storing trunk, the Pachira requires little water: only water when the potting soil is largely dry. In summer about once a week to a week and a half, in winter once every three weeks.

Too much water is the only way to make a Pachira truly unhappy. Feeding: once a month during the growing season.

Is something wrong with your Pachira?

Yellow or falling leaves almost always indicate too much water; let the root ball dry thoroughly. A soft trunk is an alarm signal of root rot. Brown leaf tips indicate dry air. If it loses leaves after a move, give it a few weeks of rest; he recovers quickly.

Repotting and pot choice

Repot the Pachira every two to three years in the spring. Choose a pot that is one size larger and use airy, well-drained potting soil, possibly with some sand. The braided trunk simply remains in shape. You can find the matching decorative pots directly on this page.

Toxic to pets?

The Pachira is not poisonous to cats and dogs. Even the leaves are harmless to a nibbling cat. Together with its easy-going nature, this makes it an ideal family plant.

Growth and size

The Pachira grows quietly and maintains its compact, tree-like shape almost automatically. You can cut back new shoots at the top for a fuller crown. The characteristic braided trunks have been years in the making at the nursery.
