The Schefflera dossier

Schefflera arboricola

The Schefflera comes from Taiwan and southern China, where it grows as a small tree. Its leaves stand like fingers on a hand, hence the nickname finger tree.

It is one of the most rewarding houseplants: fast growing, full and almost always happy.

Placement and light

The Schefflera does well in a light spot without bright afternoon sun, but also accepts partial shade. Variegated varieties need more light to maintain their markings.

Keep the temperature above 12 degrees and avoid drafts. In the summer it can be sheltered outside.

Water and feeding

Water as soon as the top centimeters of soil are dry: about once a week in summer, once every two weeks in winter. The Schefflera would rather be a little too dry than too wet.

Feed every two weeks from March to September. Wiping the leaves occasionally keeps them shiny.

Is something wrong with your Schefflera?

Leaf loss in Schefflera is usually a sign of too much water or a place that is too dark. Yellow leaves indicate wet feet, sticky leaves indicate scale insects; this is the most common pest on this plant. Bare growth means a lack of light: then prune it into shape.

Repotting and pot choice

Repot the Schefflera every two to three years in the spring in a pot that is one size larger. Standard potting soil is sufficient; make sure there is drainage. Large specimens appreciate a sturdy pot. You can find the matching decorative pots directly on this page.

Toxic to pets?

The Schefflera contains calcium oxalate and is poisonous to cats and dogs. Chewing irritates the mouth and stomach. Place the plant out of reach of nibbling pets or choose an animal-friendly alternative.
