This is the largest Strelitzia nicolai we stock: 250 cm tall, in a ø50 cm nursery pot. The leaves are broad and dark green and split naturally along the veins. At this height the plant fills a corner where a 150 cm specimen still looks lost.
Where to put it
The Strelitzia nicolai wants plenty of light. A few hours of direct sun a day is fine, but harsh midday sun behind glass scorches the leaf edges. Keep it away from a radiator and out of the draught of a door that opens often. Those are the two usual causes of brown leaf edges.
Water and feeding
Water about once a week and let the top layer of soil dry out in between. From April to September, feed it liquid plant food every two weeks. Turn the pot a quarter every now and then, so the plant grows straight up instead of towards the window. Repot every two years, into a pot one size larger. The Strelitzia nicolai comes from South Africa and owes the name white bird of paradise to the shape of its flower. Indoors it rarely flowers, so you buy it for the leaves. Dutch growers raise these plants and we send them straight from the greenhouse, in a box we have made for this height.

Very happy with the Kentia palm that I ordered. A beautiful, large palm that fits perfectly in my living room. Ordering it was super easy, communication was clear and the delivery was fast. I was a bit worried about how a plant this big could be delivered without damage, but this was all carefully dealth with through their own transport. So it arrived in a perfect condition and also stayed like that, despite the change of environment.
