Ground cover plants

An evergreen ground cover keeps the soil covered all year round. Weeds get little chance and the soil dries out more slowly. For shade under trees and shrubs, choose Japanese spurge (Pachysandra), lesser periwinkle (Vinca minor) or ivy. On a sunny slope or bank, cotoneaster and rose of Sharon (Hypericum calycinum) do well. Between paving and stepping stones, low types such as Irish moss and brass buttons fit in nicely.

For every variety you choose the number of plants yourself. If you only know the size of the area, enter it and the page works out per m² how many plants you need. We turn that number into the best-value combination of packs, so you do not buy more than you need. Planting closer together gives you a closed layer sooner.

Want flowers among your ground cover? Combine it with perennials or low ornamental grasses. You will find more for the garden among all our outdoor plants.

Frequently asked questions

Which ground cover stays green in winter?
Lesser periwinkle, Japanese spurge, cotoneaster, ivy and wintercreeper keep their leaves in winter. Japanese sedge and lilyturf stay green too. If you want ground cover that covers the soil all year round, choose one of these.
Which ground cover grows in shade?
Japanese spurge (Pachysandra) and lesser periwinkle (Vinca minor) are the best-known ground cover plants for shade. Ivy, Geranium macrorrhizum and creeping dogwood also grow well under trees and shrubs, where little light gets through.
How many ground cover plants do you need per m²?
That depends on the variety and how quickly you want a closed layer. Small, slow growers go closer together than wide-spreading types. On the product page you enter the area and see how many plants you need.
When should you plant ground cover?
Potted plants can be planted almost all year, as long as the ground is not frozen. Spring and autumn are easiest because the soil stays moist. Water regularly during the first weeks after planting.
