Plants for a dark corner, greenery without much light

A dark corner is usually away from the window and receives no direct sun. It needs a houseplant that tolerates low light. A large ZZ plant, snake plant, cast-iron plant or Dracaena is a dependable choice for a hall, bedroom or living room. Kentia palms, parlour palms and lady palms also suit this position when the room still receives daylight during the day.

Low light is not the same as no light. No plant can continue to grow in complete darkness, so do not place one in a windowless cupboard or closed room. In a darker position, plants make less new growth and the compost dries more slowly. This is normal and mainly means watering with more restraint.

For a large plant in a dark corner, choose specimens of about 100 to 230 cm. A kentia palm or Dracaena adds height, while a broad Rhapis or Aspidistra gives a calm, full shape. Climbing Philodendron, Epipremnum, Scindapsus and ivy work well when you want foliage to trail from a tall pot or climb a support.

Check the compost before watering. Water only when the upper layer feels dry, and do not leave water in the decorative pot. In low light, overwatering is a greater risk than underwatering. Plants are supplied directly from the grower in their nursery pot. Delivery in the Netherlands is free for orders from €99.

Frequently asked questions

Which large houseplant is suitable for low light?
ZZ plant, snake plant, cast-iron plant and Dracaena are strong choices. Kentia, parlour and lady palms also tolerate limited daylight when the room receives daylight.
Can a plant stand in complete darkness?
No. Every plant needs daylight. These plants tolerate less light than many houseplants, but not a closed room or corner without any daylight.
How often should I water a plant in low light?
Check the compost first. It dries more slowly in a dark position, so water less often than near a window. Never leave a layer of water in the decorative pot.
Which plants suit a low-light bedroom?
A ZZ plant, snake plant, Dracaena or cast-iron plant often suits a bedroom with daylight at a distance. Choose a size that leaves room around the plant.
Are these plants supplied in large sizes?
This collection includes many large houseplants, often around 100 to 230 cm. The current height is stated on each product page.
