Plant anemone bulbs in autumn, from September to the end of November. They are actually hard little tubers. Soak them overnight in lukewarm water before planting, so they swell up and sprout faster.
How deep do you plant anemone bulbs?
Plant the tubers about 5 to 8 centimetres deep. With the Grecian windflower (Anemone blanda) you cannot always tell which side is up, so lay them flat. They will find their own way up.
How many anemone bulbs do you need per m²?
With a planting distance of 8 to 12 centimetres, you need about 100 anemones per square metre. Use the calculator on this page to convert your area into a number of bulbs.
Can you plant anemone bulbs in a pot?
Yes, anemones do well in a pot or planter with well-drained soil. The poppy anemone (Anemone de Caen) also gives lovely cut flowers in a pot. Move the pot to a sheltered spot during a hard frost.
Do anemones come back every year?
The Grecian windflower comes back every year and naturalises under trees and shrubs. The poppy anemone is less hardy and often only flowers well in its first year. A layer of leaves or straw over the soil helps it through the winter.
