Details

Hawaiian palm with a swollen, grey-green stem and a rosette of glossy, spoon-shaped leaves. It stores water in its stem and therefore needs little watering.

Species: Brighamia insignis · Height: 25 cm (including nursery pot) · Pot size: ø12 cm

The Hawaiian palm (Brighamia insignis) is not a true palm, but a succulent-like plant with a swollen, grey-green stem topped with a rosette of glossy, spoon-shaped leaves. This specimen is 25 cm tall including the grow pot and comes in a pot of ø12 cm.

Thanks to its small size, it fits on a windowsill, a desk or a bookshelf. In autumn it can produce fragrant, pale yellow flowers. It wants a bright spot and tolerates some sun. Because it stores water in its stem, you water it sparingly and let the soil dry out completely in between. In winter it may lose a few leaves, which is normal. You receive it in the grow pot; a decorative pot is sold separately.

Delivery

Shipping a two-metre plant takes more than a box and some tape. That's why we do it differently from an ordinary online shop.

How your plant arrives in one piece

Fresh from the greenhouse
Your plant does not sit in a warehouse for weeks. The grower only takes it out of the greenhouse after you order and prepares it straight away.
Packed securely
In a box made for plants. Plant and soil are secured and a protective sleeve keeps the leaves intact, so nothing shifts on the way.
Protected from heat and frost
Is it very hot or freezing outside? Then we add a cold pack or heat pack to the box, so the weather doesn't affect your plant on the way.
The right carrier for every size
Smaller plants are delivered by PostNL or DHL. The very largest plants travel upright on a pallet with a specialist carrier.
You know exactly when it arrives
As soon as your plant is on its way, you receive track & trace by email, so you can make sure someone is home and, for a large plant, someone to help carry it in.

When will your plant arrive?

Frequently asked questions about Brighamia insignis

The questions we're asked most about this plant. Can't find yours? Our plant experts are happy to help.

Ask your question

Is the Hawaiian palm (Brighamia insignis) a real palm?

No, the Brighamia insignis is called the Hawaiian palm because of its bare trunk topped by a rosette of leaves, but it belongs to the bellflower family. It comes from Hawaii, where it has become rare in the wild. The plants sold commercially are nursery grown.

Where should you place a Brighamia insignis?

Place your Brighamia insignis in a bright spot; some sun is fine. It likes warmth, between 18 and 25 °C, and should not stand below 12 °C. A bright windowsill free from draughts works well.

How often should you water a Brighamia insignis?

Give a Brighamia insignis little water and let the soil dry out completely in between. It stores water in its swollen stem. Water even more sparingly in winter.

Why is my Brighamia insignis getting yellow leaves?

A Brighamia insignis often lets its lower leaves turn yellow and drop in winter or after a move; that is normal and it will later grow new leaves at the top. If lots of leaves turn yellow at once, check that the soil isn't too wet or the spot too cold. Also look under the leaves, as spider mites can cause yellowing.

How big does a Brighamia insignis get?

A Brighamia insignis grows slowly indoors and stays compact for a long time. XXLplant sells it 25 cm tall in a ø12 cm pot, measured including the nursery pot. A size for a windowsill, desk or side table.

Is a Brighamia insignis toxic?

Little is known about the toxicity of the Brighamia insignis. To be on the safe side, keep it out of reach of pets and small children.
