The Dracaena dossier

Dracaena

The Dracaena grows in the tropics of Africa, where some species grow into centuries-old trees. Its name means dragon's blood tree, after the red resin that some species produce.

In the home, the Dracaena has an architectural appearance: characterful trunks with crowns of graceful, often drawn leaves.

Placement and light

The Dracaena has few requirements: a place with average light is enough, although it grows faster the lighter it is. Only avoid bright afternoon sun on the leaves.

It is also easy in terms of temperature; above 12 degrees is fine. Variegated leaves keep their markings best in a lighter spot.

Water and feeding

The Dracaena drinks little: only water when the top half of the potting soil feels dry. In summer, once a week is more than sufficient, in winter once every two to three weeks.

Too much water is the biggest pitfall; the thick trunks store moisture themselves. Feeding is only necessary once a month during the growing season.

Is something wrong with your Dracaena?

Yellow leaves and a soft trunk indicate too much water. Brown leaf tips indicate dry air or fluorine in tap water; spraying helps. It is normal that the bottom leaf gradually falls off, so the characteristic bare trunk grows. Check sticky leaves for scale.

Repotting and pot choice

A Dracaena grows slowly and only needs to be repotted once every three years, preferably in the spring. Choose a slightly larger, stable pot and well-drained soil. You can find the matching decorative pots directly on this page.

Toxic to pets?

The Dracaena contains saponins and is poisonous to cats and dogs. Cats in particular like to nibble on the long leaves, causing salivation and vomiting. Place it out of reach of pets or choose an animal-friendly alternative.

Growth and size

The Dracaena grows quietly and compactly; its trunks only grow a few centimeters longer each year. Large specimens are therefore many years old and retain their shape almost automatically.

How big does a Dracaena 'Cintho' get?
A Dracaena 'Cintho' grows steadily and after some years can top 2 metres indoors. XXLplant sells it from 150 to 210 cm tall, measured including the nursery pot. The branched 210 cm plant is the largest and fullest size.
Should I choose a single-stem or branched Dracaena 'Cintho'?
A Dracaena 'Cintho' with one or a few stems is slender and fits into a narrower corner. A branched Dracaena has several crowns and fills more space in width. Both need the same care.
Where should you put a Dracaena 'Cintho'?
Put your Dracaena 'Cintho' in a spot with bright light to partial shade, without harsh midday sun. That means it also does well a little further from the window. Keep it between 16 and 24 °C and not below 13 °C.
How often should you water a Dracaena 'Cintho'?
Give a Dracaena 'Cintho' little to moderate water and let the top layer of soil dry out between waterings. Don't leave water in the decorative pot. In winter, less water is enough.
Is a Dracaena 'Cintho' toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes, a Dracaena is toxic to cats and dogs. The leaves contain saponins that can cause drooling, vomiting or stomach upsets. Keep it out of reach of pets that chew plants.
Why is my Dracaena getting brown leaf tips?
Brown tips on Dracaena leaves are often caused by dry air, hard tap water or irregular watering. A few brown tips on older leaves are normal. Trim them off and water regularly, without keeping the soil wet.
How is a Dracaena 'Cintho' delivered?
Your Dracaena travels upright in its own plant box, with the crown in a paper sleeve and the pot secured. The largest plants go with a specialist carrier, others with PostNL or DHL, and in frost or heat we add a heat pack or cold pack. It usually arrives within 4 to 5 working days.
