The Dracaena dossier
Dracaena
The Dracaena grows in the tropics of Africa, where some species grow into centuries-old trees. Its name means dragon's blood tree, after the red resin that some species produce.
In the home, the Dracaena has an architectural appearance: characterful trunks with crowns of graceful, often drawn leaves.

Placement and light
The Dracaena has few requirements: a place with average light is enough, although it grows faster the lighter it is. Only avoid bright afternoon sun on the leaves.
It is also easy in terms of temperature; above 12 degrees is fine. Variegated leaves keep their markings best in a lighter spot.
Water and feeding
The Dracaena drinks little: only water when the top half of the potting soil feels dry. In summer, once a week is more than sufficient, in winter once every two to three weeks.
Too much water is the biggest pitfall; the thick trunks store moisture themselves. Feeding is only necessary once a month during the growing season.
Is something wrong with your Dracaena?
Yellow leaves and a soft trunk indicate too much water. Brown leaf tips indicate dry air or fluorine in tap water; spraying helps. It is normal that the bottom leaf gradually falls off, so the characteristic bare trunk grows. Check sticky leaves for scale.
A Dracaena grows slowly and only needs to be repotted once every three years, preferably in the spring. Choose a slightly larger, stable pot and well-drained soil. You can find the matching decorative pots directly on this page.
Toxic to pets?
The Dracaena contains saponins and is poisonous to cats and dogs. Cats in particular like to nibble on the long leaves, causing salivation and vomiting. Place it out of reach of pets or choose an animal-friendly alternative.
The Dracaena grows quietly and compactly; its trunks only grow a few centimeters longer each year. Large specimens are therefore many years old and retain their shape almost automatically.
This branched Dracaena Lemon Lime is 120 cm tall, measured including nursery pot, and comes in a ø27 cm pot. It keeps growing slowly indoors, fastest in a bright spot.
What is the difference between a branched dragon tree and one on a stem?
A branched dragon tree has several side branches, each with its own leaf tuft, so it looks broader and fuller. A plant on a stem is slimmer and takes up less space.
How much light does a Dracaena Lemon Lime need?
It prefers a bright spot, but not in strong midday sun, as that scorches the leaves. In a dark spot it grows more slowly and the lime green becomes less vivid.
How often do you water a Dracaena Lemon Lime?
Water when the top layer of potting soil is dry, in summer about once a week and less in winter. Let excess water drain away.
Is a Dracaena Lemon Lime toxic to pets?
Yes, Dracaena fragrans is toxic to cats and dogs. An animal that chews the leaves may vomit or drool.
How is the Dracaena Lemon Lime delivered?
The plant travels upright in its own plant box, with the crown in a paper sleeve and the pot secured in the box. In frost or heat a heat pack or cold pack is included, and large plants are delivered by our own courier.
