Vinca major, the greater periwinkle, is an evergreen ground cover with glossy dark green leaves and blue-purple flowers from spring into summer. It has larger leaves and larger flowers than the lesser periwinkle and forms long, trailing stems about 20 to 40 centimetres tall.

Use it to cover the ground under trees and shrubs, on a slope or over the edge of a low wall or large planter. A dense layer keeps weeds down. It grows best in partial shade to shade and is hardy in a normal winter. The plant is toxic to people, cats and dogs if eaten. You receive young plants in a 9 centimetre pot.

How many Vinca major do you plant per m²?

Plant about 7 plants per square metre, 35 to 40 centimetres apart. Because it forms long stems, the bed closes up fairly quickly. The calculator on this page works out the number for you.

What is the difference between Vinca major and Vinca minor?

Vinca major has larger leaves, larger flowers and longer stems than Vinca minor. It grows faster and gets somewhat taller. Vinca minor is lower and slightly more resistant to severe frost.

Does greater periwinkle grow in shade?

Yes, shade and partial shade are where it grows best, including under trees. In full sun the soil must stay moist, otherwise the leaves scorch.

Is Vinca major evergreen and hardy?

It is evergreen and keeps its leaves in winter. In a normal Dutch winter it is hardy. In severe frost the stems may die back, but the plant sprouts again in spring.

Is Vinca major toxic?

Yes, periwinkle is toxic to people, cats and dogs if eaten. Do not plant it where pets like to chew on plants.
