Details

Low, evergreen Irish moss with fresh green foliage and small white flowers. For between stepping stones, in a rock garden or as soft green filler.

Type: Sagina subulata · Pot: ø9 cm · Height: 10-25 cm

Sagina subulata, also known as Irish moss or heath pearlwort, is a low-growing, evergreen ground cover with fresh green, moss-like foliage. It forms a dense, soft carpet and flowers in late spring and summer with small white flowers. You receive young plants in a 9 centimetre pot, 10 to 25 centimetres tall on delivery.

It is suitable for between stepping stones and paving, in a rock garden or as green filler in a spot where grass will not grow. It grows in sun to partial shade, in soil that does not dry out for long periods. Walking on it now and then is fine, but a busy footpath is too much. It is hardy and needs little maintenance.

Delivery

Shipping a two-metre plant takes more than a box and some tape. That's why we do it differently from an ordinary online shop.

How your plant arrives in one piece

Fresh from the greenhouse
Your plant does not sit in a warehouse for weeks. The grower only takes it out of the greenhouse after you order and prepares it straight away.
Packed securely
In a box made for plants. Plant and soil are secured and a protective sleeve keeps the leaves intact, so nothing shifts on the way.
Protected from heat and frost
Is it very hot or freezing outside? Then we add a cold pack or heat pack to the box, so the weather doesn't affect your plant on the way.
The right carrier for every size
Smaller plants are delivered by PostNL or DHL. The very largest plants travel upright on a pallet with a specialist carrier.
You know exactly when it arrives
As soon as your plant is on its way, you receive track & trace by email, so you can make sure someone is home and, for a large plant, someone to help carry it in.

When will your plant arrive?

Veelgestelde vragen over Sagina subulata

De vragen die we het vaakst krijgen over deze plant. Staat jouw vraag er niet bij? Onze plantexperts helpen je graag.

Stel je vraag

How many Sagina subulata do you need per m²?

Plant about 20 plants per square metre, 20 to 25 centimetres apart. Between stepping stones, put a plant every 20 centimetres in each joint. The calculator on this page shows how many plants you need.

When do you plant Irish moss?

Plant in spring, from March to May, or in early autumn. Keep the soil moist for the first few weeks so the plants grow together well.

Can you walk on Sagina subulata?

Walking on it now and then is fine, for example between stepping stones. As a replacement for a lawn that is walked or played on every day, Irish moss is too delicate.

Is Irish moss evergreen and hardy?

Yes, Sagina subulata stays green all year and is hardy. In a hot, dry summer it does need extra water.

Where should you plant Sagina subulata?

In sun to partial shade, in a spot where the soil does not dry out for long periods. It looks its best between stepping stones and in rock gardens.
