The Chinese fan palm (Livistona chinensis) forms broad, glossy fan-shaped leaves whose tips hang down gracefully. This specimen is 150 cm tall including the grow pot and stands in a pot of ø24 cm. It grows outward and so does well in a bright living room, a conservatory or a spacious workspace. This indoor palm wants plenty of light, but no harsh midday sun through glass; in winter it can stand closer to the window. Keep the soil evenly lightly moist and prevent water from being left standing at the bottom of the pot. It likes it warm, so room temperature and no draughts. The palm is supplied in the grow pot, and a decorative pot can be chosen separately.

Plant care

Location: Bright, indirect light to partial shade; avoid direct sunlight. A spot near an east- or west-facing window is ideal. In winter, the palm can be placed a little closer to the window, but always avoid direct sunlight.
Water: Keep the potting soil slightly moist, but avoid wet feet. Water regularly, especially during the growing season (once a week), and less frequently in winter (once every two weeks). Allow the top layer to dry slightly between waterings.
Feeding: Feed palm tree once a month or every 6-8 weeks in spring and summer. Do not fertilize in autumn and winter.
Temperature: Between 18-24°C, not below 12°C. Prefers high humidity; mist the leaves regularly.

• Remove dead or brown leaves for a fresh look
• Repot every 2-3 years in spring

Flowering

As a houseplant, the Livistona chinensis almost never flowers. For that the palm would need to be much older and bigger and get far more light than is possible in a living room. You buy it for its large fan leaves.

How big does a Livistona chinensis get indoors?

The Livistona chinensis grows steadily indoors and over the years can reach well over 2 metres tall and wide. At XXLplant you buy this fan palm at 100 to 150 cm tall, measured including the nursery pot. Expect a good width too, as the fan-shaped leaves arch gracefully outwards.
