Details

The Opuntia Cactus, also known as the Prickly Pear Cactus, is a striking succulent with flat, oval pads that stack to form a graphic, sculptural structure. A tough eye-catcher that immediately adds desert vibes to your interior or sunny veranda.

Species: Opuntia ficus-indica · Height: 120 cm (including nursery pot) · Pot size: ø38 cm

The prickly pear cactus (Opuntia ficus-indica) grows with flat, oval pads stacked on top of each other, together forming an irregular, sculptural plant. This specimen is 120 cm tall including the grow pot and stands in a pot of ø38 cm. It belongs in the sunniest spot you have: in front of a south-facing window, in a conservatory or outside on a warm terrace in summer. For anyone with little time it's a good choice, as it copes well with drought. Water it occasionally in summer and let the soil dry out completely in between; in winter almost none at all. It can take a little frost if kept dry, but it's better to overwinter it in a pot somewhere bright and frost-free. Watch out for the fine spines when moving it.

Delivery

Shipping a two-metre plant takes more than a box and some tape. That's why we do it differently from an ordinary online shop.

How your plant arrives in one piece

Fresh from the greenhouse
Your plant does not sit in a warehouse for weeks. The grower only takes it out of the greenhouse after you order and prepares it straight away.
Packed securely
In a box made for plants. Plant and soil are secured and a protective sleeve keeps the leaves intact, so nothing shifts on the way.
Protected from heat and frost
Is it very hot or freezing outside? Then we add a cold pack or heat pack to the box, so the weather doesn't affect your plant on the way.
The right carrier for every size
Smaller plants are delivered by PostNL or DHL. The very largest plants travel upright on a pallet with a specialist carrier.
You know exactly when it arrives
As soon as your plant is on its way, you receive track & trace by email, so you can make sure someone is home and, for a large plant, someone to help carry it in.

When will your plant arrive?

4–5working days after you order

Frequently asked questions about Opuntia ficus-indica

The questions we're asked most about this plant. Can't find yours? Our plant experts are happy to help.

Ask your question

How big does an Opuntia ficus-indica grow?

In warm countries the Opuntia ficus-indica grows into a shrub or small tree several metres tall. In a pot it stays smaller and grows by forming ever new pads. XXLplant sells this prickly pear cactus at 120 cm tall, measured including the nursery pot.

Where should you place an Opuntia ficus-indica?

An Opuntia ficus-indica wants full sun and as much direct light as possible. Indoors, a spot in front of a south-facing window is best. In summer it can go outside in a sunny spot.

How often should you water an Opuntia ficus-indica?

Give an Opuntia ficus-indica little water and let the soil dry out completely between waterings. In winter keep it almost dry. Too much water during a cool period is the biggest threat to this cactus.

Can an Opuntia ficus-indica overwinter outdoors?

No, do not leave an Opuntia ficus-indica outdoors over winter. Overwinter it somewhere cool, bright and frost-free, for example an unheated but frost-free room. In spring it can go back outside.

Can you eat the fruit of the Opuntia ficus-indica?

The Opuntia ficus-indica is the cactus that gives us the prickly pear. Fruit only forms after flowering, and a potted plant in our climate rarely flowers or bears fruit. So buy it for its shape rather than for a harvest.

How is an Opuntia ficus-indica delivered?

XXLplant ships the Opuntia upright in its own plant box, with the plant in a paper sleeve and the pot secured. In frost or heat we add a heat pack or cold pack. Wear gloves when unpacking it because of the spines.
