The Beaucarnea is a characterful plant with a thick trunk and gracefully arching leaves. This evergreen “mini-tree” instantly adds a playful, natural look to your interior.

The ponytail palm (Beaucarnea recurvata), also known as elephant's foot, has a thick, bulbous stem base in which it stores water, topped with tufts of long, narrow leaves that hang gracefully. This multi-stemmed plant is 130 cm tall, measured including the grow pot, giving it several tufts of foliage.

It suits a sunny living room or a bright workspace well, and is a good fit for anyone who sometimes forgets to water. Place it in a bright spot, direct sun is fine. Because the stem stores moisture, water only once the soil is completely dry; in winter, once every few weeks is enough. The ponytail palm is not toxic to cats and dogs. It is delivered in the grow pot.

Plant care

Location: Sunny to bright, with plenty of indirect light. Avoid bright midday sun to prevent leaf burn. A spot near an east- or west-facing window is ideal.
Water: Water only when the top 5-7 cm of the potting soil is dry. In summer, water about once every 2-4 weeks, and less often in winter. It's better to water too little than too much; the plant stores moisture in its trunk.
Feeding: During the growing season (spring and summer), feed once a month with liquid houseplant food at half strength. Do not fertilize in winter.
Temperature: Between 20-30°C; not below 10°C. It likes warmth and does not tolerate cold and drafts well.

Extra tips:
• Repot every 2-3 years in spring, use well-draining potting soil.
• Provide a pot with good drainage.
• Do not spray, but wipe the leaf with a damp cloth to remove dust.

Flowering

Indoors, the ponytail palm almost never flowers. Only old plants in a sunny spot in warm regions produce plumes of small cream-coloured flowers. You buy it for its thick trunk and arching leaves.

A ponytail palm on a single trunk has one thick base with a single crown of leaves and looks sleek. A branched or multi-stem ponytail palm has several crowns or trunks and feels fuller and more playful. Choose a single trunk for a narrow spot, and branched or multi-stem if the plant stands freely in the room.

Where should you place a ponytail palm?

Put the ponytail palm in a bright spot with plenty of indirect light, for example by an east or west-facing window. Harsh midday sun can scorch the leaves. Keep it out of draughts and away from cold, because it struggles below 10 °C.

How often should you water a ponytail palm?

Only water once the top 5 to 7 cm of compost is dry. In summer that is roughly once every 2 to 4 weeks, in winter even less. The trunk stores moisture, so too little water is better than too much.

Why is my ponytail palm dying or its trunk going soft?

This is usually caused by overwatering: the roots and the base of the trunk start to rot. A soft, dark trunk is a bad sign. Let the soil dry out properly and use a pot with drainage and free-draining compost.

Is the ponytail palm toxic to cats and dogs?

The ponytail palm is listed by the ASPCA as non-toxic to cats and dogs. The narrow leaves are tough, though, so a cat that nibbles on them may get an upset stomach. It is best to keep the plant out of reach of keen chewers.

How is a ponytail palm delivered by XXLplant?
