Plant ranunculus in spring, in March and April, once the hardest frosts are over. They then flower in early summer. Ranunculus are not hardy, so planting in autumn only makes sense in a pot that overwinters frost-free.
How deep do you plant ranunculus bulbs?
Ranunculus are claw-shaped tubers. Soak them in lukewarm water for a few hours first, then plant them 3 to 5 centimetres deep, with the claws pointing down.
How many ranunculus bulbs do you need per m²?
With a planting distance of 10 to 15 centimetres, you need about 60 ranunculus per square metre. Use the calculator on this page to convert your area into a number of bulbs.
Can you plant ranunculus bulbs in a pot?
Yes, ranunculus do well in a pot or planter in a sunny spot. Make sure the soil is well-drained and the pot has a drainage hole. They also make good cut flowers.
Do ranunculus come back every year?
In the Netherlands, ranunculus usually do not survive the winter in the ground. You can dig up the tubers after flowering, let them dry and store them frost-free until the following spring. Many people plant new ones every year.
