Details

The Rhapis Excelsa is an elegant bamboo palm with slender stems and compact growth. This plant is ideal for dark corners and offices. A strong, stylish palm that requires little space but offers plenty of character.

Species: Rhapis excelsa · Height: 190 cm (including nursery pot) · Pot size: ø34 cm

The lady palm (Rhapis excelsa) is an indoor palm with dense clusters of thin, fibrous stems and glossy leaves that fan out like fingers. This specimen is 190 cm tall including the grow pot and stands in a pot of ø34 cm. It suits a hallway, corridor or office with little daylight, where many other palms struggle. Direct sun can discolour the leaves, so a spot with indirect light or partial shade works best. It's better to give small amounts of water rather than a lot at once, and let the top layer of soil dry out in between. It is not toxic to cats and dogs. The palm is supplied in the grow pot, and a decorative pot is chosen separately.

Delivery

Shipping a two-metre plant takes more than a box and some tape. That's why we do it differently from an ordinary online shop.

How your plant arrives in one piece

Fresh from the greenhouse
Your plant does not sit in a warehouse for weeks. The grower only takes it out of the greenhouse after you order and prepares it straight away.
Packed securely
In a box made for plants. Plant and soil are secured and a protective sleeve keeps the leaves intact, so nothing shifts on the way.
Protected from heat and frost
Is it very hot or freezing outside? Then we add a cold pack or heat pack to the box, so the weather doesn't affect your plant on the way.
The right carrier for every size
Smaller plants are delivered by PostNL or DHL. The very largest plants travel upright on a pallet with a specialist carrier.
You know exactly when it arrives
As soon as your plant is on its way, you receive track & trace by email, so you can make sure someone is home and, for a large plant, someone to help carry it in.

When will your plant arrive?

4–5working days after you order

Plant care

Location: (Partial) shade; tolerates low light, but grows best in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight.
Water: Keep the soil slightly moist, but allow the topsoil to dry slightly between waterings. Water in small amounts rather than too much at once; avoid wet feet. Water less in winter.
Feeding: Feed with liquid palm food once every 1-2 weeks in spring and summer. Do not fertilize in autumn and winter.
Temperature: Between 16-21°C; in winter not below 10°C.

Extra tips:
• Repot every 2 years in spring.
• Remove dead or brown leaves for a fresh look.
• Spray the leaves regularly to increase humidity and remove dust.
• Do not prune at the trunk.

Flowering

A Rhapis excelsa rarely flowers indoors. When it does, small, inconspicuous flower clusters appear between the leaves. You buy this lady palm for its hand-shaped leaves and full shape.

Please note: this is a natural plant. Your plant may differ from the photo in the number of leaves and stems. We grow to pot size and height.

Plant height may vary by up to 10 cm. Height includes the nursery pot. The nursery pot may differ from the one in the photo.

Frequently asked questions about Rhapis excelsa

The questions we're asked most about this plant. Can't find yours? Our plant experts are happy to help.

Ask your question

Is a Rhapis excelsa toxic to cats and dogs?

No, the Rhapis excelsa is listed by the ASPCA as non-toxic to cats and dogs. That makes this lady palm a good choice if you have pets. Of course it is better not to let them chew it, so the leaves stay looking good.

How big does a Rhapis excelsa grow?

A Rhapis excelsa grows slowly and indoors becomes a dense clump of well over two metres after many years. At XXLplant you buy it at 120 to 190 cm tall, so you have a mature plant straight away. We measure the height including the nursery pot.

Where should you put a Rhapis excelsa?

Place the Rhapis excelsa in a bright spot or partial shade, out of direct sunlight. It tolerates less light than most palms, so it can also stand a little further from the window. Keep it out of draughts.

How often should you water a Rhapis excelsa?

Keep the soil lightly moist and let the top layer dry out a little between waterings. Do not leave water standing in the decorative pot. It needs less water in winter than in summer.

Why is my Rhapis excelsa getting brown leaf tips?

Brown tips are usually caused by dry air, too much feed or irregular watering. From spring to late summer, feed no more than once a month and keep the soil evenly, lightly moist. You can neatly trim off brown tips.

How is a Rhapis excelsa delivered?

The palm travels upright in its own plant box, with the leaves in a paper sleeve and the pot secured. The largest plants go with a specialist carrier, otherwise with PostNL or DHL. If it arrives damaged, send us photos and we will find a solution.
