The snake plant comes from tropical West Africa, from Nigeria to the Congo. There it grows in open, dry areas among rocks and shrubs, in soil that can stay dry for a long time. Its thick leaves and rhizomes act as a water reservoir.
The name Zeylanica refers to Ceylon, the old name for Sri Lanka. In the nursery trade it stands for a dark green form with grey-green bands and no yellow edge.

Placement and light
A bright spot is ideal, with some morning or evening sun if possible. The plant also tolerates partial shade and even a dark corner, but hardly grows there and then needs even less water.
Keep the temperature above 12 degrees and avoid cold draughts. Dry indoor air is no problem; misting isn't needed and water in the rosette can actually cause rot.
Water and feeding
Only water when the soil is completely dry, including at the bottom of the pot. In summer that is usually once every two to four weeks, in winter once every four to six weeks or less.
Pour along the edge of the pot and tip away any water still standing in the decorative pot after fifteen minutes. From April to September, feed at half strength about once a month.
Is something wrong with your Sansevieria?
Soft, yellow or glassy leaf bases point to too much water and root rot; that is by far the most common reason a snake plant dies. Limp or falling leaves are often caused by too little light combined with too much water.
Brown, dry tips come from damage or a long dry spell. Mealybugs can hide in the leaf axils; wipe them off with a cloth dipped in methylated spirit.
Only repot when the rhizomes fill the pot or the nursery pot starts to bulge, usually every two to three years in spring. Choose a pot one size larger with a drainage hole and use free-draining soil such as cactus mix with perlite.
Large plants are top-heavy; a heavy ceramic pot keeps them from tipping over. You'll find matching decorative pots right on this page.
Toxic to pets?
The snake plant contains saponins and is listed by the ASPCA as toxic to cats and dogs. Chewing or eating it can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Symptoms are usually mild, but keep the plant out of reach of pets that like to nibble on plants.
The snake plant grows slowly. In a bright, warm spot a few new leaves appear during the growing season, often as a shoot next to the existing leaves. In a dark spot growth almost stops, and that is not a problem.
Each plant is 40 cm tall, measured including the nursery pot, and comes in a pot of ø14 cm. You receive two. They grow slowly and occasionally produce a new leaf or an offset.
Where should you place a snake plant?
Almost anywhere: it grows best in a bright spot, but it also tolerates shade. It copes reasonably well with bright sun behind glass, provided it gets used to it gradually.
How often should you water a snake plant?
A little every two weeks in summer, and once every four to six weeks in winter. Let the soil dry out completely in between. Too much water is the main reason a snake plant dies.
Is a snake plant toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes, the snake plant is toxic to cats and dogs. Eating it can cause vomiting and diarrhoea. Keep it out of reach if you have pets that chew on plants.
Why are the leaves of my snake plant becoming limp or soft?
Usually this is caused by too much water, which makes the roots rot. Let the soil dry out completely and then water much less often.
