All about
The Strelitzia dossier
Strelitzia nicolai
The Strelitzia nicolai comes from the coastal forests of South Africa, where it grows into a tree-like plant many meters high. Its large, banana-like leaves catch plenty of sun and wind. Cracks in the leaves are completely natural: this way the plant allows the wind to pass through without being blown over.
Indoors, the Strelitzia grows into an impressive houseplant with a tropical appearance. It is not known as the bird of paradise plant for nothing.

Placement and light
The Strelitzia is a real sun worshiper: the more light, the better. Place it in the brightest spot in the house, preferably directly in front of a large window facing south or west. Too little light inhibits growth and makes the petioles limp.
Turn the plant a quarter turn regularly for even growth. Keep the temperature above 12 degrees; In summer it can also be placed outside in a sheltered position.
Water and feeding
Keep the potting soil slightly moist during the growing season and water about once or twice a week in the summer. In winter the soil may become drier in between. Avoid a layer of water at the bottom of the pot, because the roots do not like that.
Provide plant food every two weeks from March to September. Wipe the large leaves occasionally with a damp cloth so that they catch more light.
Is something wrong with your Strelitzia?
Brown edges usually indicate dry air or a water shortage, yellow leaves indicate too much water. Cracks in the leaves are normal and part of the plant. If the leaf curls lengthwise, the plant is thirsty. In dry air, spider mites can appear, recognizable by fine spider silk under the leaves.
Repot a young Strelitzia every two years in the spring; older specimens can be kept in the same pot for longer. The strong roots can literally deform a plastic nursery pot. Choose a sturdy pot that is about twenty percent wider and use nutritious, well-drained potting soil. You can find the matching decorative pots directly on this page.
Toxic to pets?
The Strelitzia is slightly poisonous to cats and dogs, especially the flowers and seeds. Chewing the plant can cause stomach complaints. Serious poisoning is rare, but it is best to keep the plant out of reach of nibbling pets or choose an animal-friendly alternative.
The Strelitzia is one of the fastest growers among large houseplants: in good light it produces several large leaves per year, always from the heart of the plant. Our XXL ones are years old and immediately make a tropical statement in your home.
What is the difference between a Strelitzia augusta and a Strelitzia nicolai?
The Strelitzia augusta (botanically Strelitzia alba) and the Strelitzia nicolai look very much alike: both have large, banana-like leaves and grow tall. The clearest difference is in the flower, which is entirely white on the augusta and white with blue on the nicolai. The names are often used interchangeably in the trade, and as a houseplant you buy both for their foliage.
How big does a Strelitzia augusta get indoors?
Indoors a Strelitzia augusta can grow to about 2.5 to 3 metres if it gets enough light and pot space. XXLplant sells it from 160 to 250 cm tall, measured including the nursery pot. That makes it suitable for a high room or a large empty corner.
What is a multi-stem Strelitzia augusta?
A Strelitzia augusta multi-stem has several stems in one pot. That makes it fuller and wider than a single-stem plant, and it fills a large space better. Do allow for the width the leaves need.
Where should you put a Strelitzia augusta?
A Strelitzia augusta wants plenty of light, ideally a spot with at least 4 hours of direct sunlight a day. In a spot that is too dark it grows slowly and the leaves get smaller. Keep it between 18 and 28 °C.
How often should you water a Strelitzia augusta?
Water your Strelitzia augusta about once a week and let the top layer of compost dry out in between. Don't leave water standing in the decorative pot. In winter it needs less.
Is a Strelitzia augusta toxic to pets?
A Strelitzia is mildly toxic to cats and dogs, especially the seeds and fruit, which can cause stomach and intestinal upsets. Indoors it rarely produces them. Even so, it is best to keep a pet that chews plants away from it.
How is a Strelitzia augusta delivered?
Your Strelitzia augusta travels upright in its own plant box, with the crown in a paper sleeve and the pot secured. Large plants are delivered by our own courier, and in frost or heat we add a heat pack or cold pack. Within the Netherlands, orders placed Sunday to Wednesday usually arrive within 2 to 3 working days.
