All about
The Schefflera dossier
Schefflera arboricola
The Schefflera comes from Taiwan and southern China, where it grows as a small tree. Its leaves stand like fingers on a hand, hence the nickname finger tree.
It is one of the most rewarding houseplants: fast growing, full and almost always happy.

Placement and light
The Schefflera does well in a light spot without bright afternoon sun, but also accepts partial shade. Variegated varieties need more light to maintain their markings.
Keep the temperature above 12 degrees and avoid drafts. In the summer it can be sheltered outside.
Water and feeding
Water as soon as the top centimeters of soil are dry: about once a week in summer, once every two weeks in winter. The Schefflera would rather be a little too dry than too wet.
Feed every two weeks from March to September. Wiping the leaves occasionally keeps them shiny.
Is something wrong with your Schefflera?
Leaf loss in Schefflera is usually a sign of too much water or a place that is too dark. Yellow leaves indicate wet feet, sticky leaves indicate scale insects; this is the most common pest on this plant. Bare growth means a lack of light: then prune it into shape.
Repot the Schefflera every two to three years in the spring in a pot that is one size larger. Standard potting soil is sufficient; make sure there is drainage. Large specimens appreciate a sturdy pot. You can find the matching decorative pots directly on this page.
Toxic to pets?
The Schefflera contains calcium oxalate and is poisonous to cats and dogs. Chewing irritates the mouth and stomach. Place the plant out of reach of nibbling pets or choose an animal-friendly alternative.
The Schefflera is a fast grower that can grow tens of centimeters per year with light and nutrition. Pruning is always allowed and will only make it fuller. Our XXL specimens have already been grown into full-fledged house trees.
This Schefflera actinophylla 'Amate' is 100 cm tall, measured including nursery pot, and comes in a ø24 cm pot. The leaves spread wide, so allow for a good width.
Where do you put a Schefflera actinophylla?
In a bright spot without strong midday sun. It tolerates partial shade, but then grows more slowly and can lose its shape a little. Turn the pot now and then so it grows evenly.
How often do you water an umbrella tree?
Water when the top layer of soil is dry, usually once a week in summer. Less in winter. Wet feet cause yellow leaves and root rot.
Is an umbrella tree toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes, Schefflera is toxic to cats and dogs. The leaves contain calcium oxalate, which irritates the mouth and stomach.
Why is my Schefflera dropping leaves?
Leaf drop is often caused by moving, draughts, too little light or too much water. After delivery it may need a while to settle in. Give it a fixed bright spot and let the soil dry out slightly between waterings.
How is the umbrella tree delivered?
The plant travels upright in its own plant box, with the crown in a paper sleeve and the pot secured in the box. In frost or heat a heat pack or cold pack is included, and large plants are delivered by our own courier.
