The Yucca dossier
Yucca
The Yucca comes from the dry, sunny regions of Central America and the southern United States. There it survives on rocky soil with hardly any water, thanks to its thick trunk that stores moisture.
This desert origin makes the Yucca one of the strongest and easiest houseplants available: sturdy, architectural and almost impossible to destroy.

Placement and light
Place a Yucca in the lightest spot you have: full sun is no problem, the more light the sturdier the plant. A spot directly in front of a south window is ideal. In the summer it can also be placed outside on the terrace.
It can survive too little light for a while, but then its growth becomes weak and pale. Temperature is hardly an issue; above 10 degrees is fine.
Water and feeding
Less is more: only water when the potting soil is largely dry. In the summer once every one and a half weeks is often enough, in the winter once every three to four weeks. The trunk stores moisture, so forgetting it once is not a disaster.
Too much water is the only real enemy of the Yucca: it causes root rot. Feeding is only necessary once a month during the growing season.
Is something wrong with your Yucca?
Yellow leaves and a soft trunk indicate too much water; then let the root ball dry thoroughly. Brown tips belong to older leaves and can be cut off. Drooping, pale leaves mean too little light. Lower leaves dying are normal: this is how the Yucca forms its trunk.
A Yucca only needs to be repotted once every three to four years, preferably in the spring. Use well-drained soil, possibly mixed with sand, and a heavy, stable pot: large specimens are top heavy. You can find the matching decorative pots directly on this page.
Toxic to pets?
The Yucca contains saponins and is therefore poisonous to cats and dogs if they chew it. This causes stomach and intestinal complaints. Fortunately, the sturdy leaves do not invite nibbling, but it is best to keep the plant out of reach of eager pets.
The Yucca grows slowly and controlled; his characteristic trunks travel for years before they arrive in your home. You will enjoy it for decades: with minimal care, a Yucca will last for generations.
A yucca grows slowly indoors and can become considerably taller after years. This branched yucca is 80 to 100 cm tall on delivery including nursery pot, size ø24 cm. The side branches make it full and broad in relation to its height.
What is the difference between a branched yucca and a yucca with separate stems?
A branched yucca has one trunk that divides into several side branches, each with its own leaf rosette. That makes it look fuller and more like a small tree. A yucca with separate stems has several straight stems side by side in one pot.
Where is the best place for a Yucca elephantipes?
In a bright spot by a window. It tolerates a somewhat darker spot for a while, but then the new leaves become thin and limp. In summer it can go on a sheltered patio; in winter it must be indoors.
How often should you water a Yucca?
Let the potting soil dry out completely before watering again, in summer about once every two weeks. In winter it needs even less. Do not fill the basket with water: water left standing at the bottom makes the trunk rot.
Is a Yucca elephantipes toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes. The ASPCA lists yucca as toxic to cats and dogs because of the saponins in the leaves. Eating it can cause vomiting and drooling. The leaf tips are also sharp.
How is a Yucca elephantipes of 80 to 100 cm delivered?
The Yucca elephantipes travels upright in its own plant box, with the crown in a paper sleeve and the pot secured. Large plants are delivered by our own courier, and in frost or heat a heat pack or cold pack is included. If the plant arrives damaged, send us photos and we will find a solution.
