The Yucca dossier

Yucca

The Yucca comes from the dry, sunny regions of Central America and the southern United States. There it survives on rocky soil with hardly any water, thanks to its thick trunk that stores moisture.

This desert origin makes the Yucca one of the strongest and easiest houseplants available: sturdy, architectural and almost impossible to destroy.

Placement and light

Place a Yucca in the lightest spot you have: full sun is no problem, the more light the sturdier the plant. A spot directly in front of a south window is ideal. In the summer it can also be placed outside on the terrace.

It can survive too little light for a while, but then its growth becomes weak and pale. Temperature is hardly an issue; above 10 degrees is fine.

Water and feeding

Less is more: only water when the potting soil is largely dry. In the summer once every one and a half weeks is often enough, in the winter once every three to four weeks. The trunk stores moisture, so forgetting it once is not a disaster.

Too much water is the only real enemy of the Yucca: it causes root rot. Feeding is only necessary once a month during the growing season.

Is something wrong with your Yucca?

Yellow leaves and a soft trunk indicate too much water; then let the root ball dry thoroughly. Brown tips belong to older leaves and can be cut off. Drooping, pale leaves mean too little light. Lower leaves dying are normal: this is how the Yucca forms its trunk.

Repotting and pot choice

A Yucca only needs to be repotted once every three to four years, preferably in the spring. Use well-drained soil, possibly mixed with sand, and a heavy, stable pot: large specimens are top heavy. You can find the matching decorative pots directly on this page.

Toxic to pets?

The Yucca contains saponins and is therefore poisonous to cats and dogs if they chew it. This causes stomach and intestinal complaints. Fortunately, the sturdy leaves do not invite nibbling, but it is best to keep the plant out of reach of eager pets.

Growth and size

The Yucca grows slowly and controlled; his characteristic trunks travel for years before they arrive in your home. You will enjoy it for decades: with minimal care, a Yucca will last for generations.
