The Yucca dossier
Yucca
The Yucca comes from the dry, sunny regions of Central America and the southern United States. There it survives on rocky soil with hardly any water, thanks to its thick trunk that stores moisture.
This desert origin makes the Yucca one of the strongest and easiest houseplants available: sturdy, architectural and almost impossible to destroy.

Placement and light
Place a Yucca in the lightest spot you have: full sun is no problem, the more light the sturdier the plant. A spot directly in front of a south window is ideal. In the summer it can also be placed outside on the terrace.
It can survive too little light for a while, but then its growth becomes weak and pale. Temperature is hardly an issue; above 10 degrees is fine.
Water and feeding
Less is more: only water when the potting soil is largely dry. In the summer once every one and a half weeks is often enough, in the winter once every three to four weeks. The trunk stores moisture, so forgetting it once is not a disaster.
Too much water is the only real enemy of the Yucca: it causes root rot. Feeding is only necessary once a month during the growing season.
Is something wrong with your Yucca?
Yellow leaves and a soft trunk indicate too much water; then let the root ball dry thoroughly. Brown tips belong to older leaves and can be cut off. Drooping, pale leaves mean too little light. Lower leaves dying are normal: this is how the Yucca forms its trunk.
A Yucca only needs to be repotted once every three to four years, preferably in the spring. Use well-drained soil, possibly mixed with sand, and a heavy, stable pot: large specimens are top heavy. You can find the matching decorative pots directly on this page.
Toxic to pets?
The Yucca contains saponins and is therefore poisonous to cats and dogs if they chew it. This causes stomach and intestinal complaints. Fortunately, the sturdy leaves do not invite nibbling, but it is best to keep the plant out of reach of eager pets.
The Yucca grows slowly and controlled; his characteristic trunks travel for years before they arrive in your home. You will enjoy it for decades: with minimal care, a Yucca will last for generations.
Yes, a Yucca rostrata is hardy as long as it stays dry and the soil drains well. Wet soil in winter is more dangerous than the cold itself. If it is in a pot, protect the pot during hard frost so the roots do not freeze.
How big does a Yucca rostrata get?
A Yucca rostrata grows slowly and over the years forms a trunk with a rounded crown of narrow, blue-green leaves. Because it grows so slowly, you buy the height you want now. XXLplant sells it from 50 to 170 cm tall, measured including the nursery pot.
Which size Yucca rostrata should I choose?
The smaller 50 and 70 cm Yucca rostrata plants mainly have a rounded crown and suit a pot on the patio well. From around 120 cm the trunk is clearly visible and it looks like a small tree. The largest sizes are real eye-catchers for a garden or a large pot.
Can a Yucca rostrata stand indoors?
A Yucca rostrata can live indoors if it stands right in front of a south-facing window. It needs full sun, and a spot with too little light makes it go limp. Most people put it outside in a sunny spot.
How often should you water a Yucca rostrata?
Give a Yucca rostrata little water and let the soil dry out completely between waterings. Outdoors in winter, do not give it any extra water. Use free-draining soil.
Is a Yucca rostrata toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes, yuccas are listed by the ASPCA as toxic to cats and dogs. The leaves of the Yucca rostrata also have a sharp point. Put it somewhere pets and children won't bump into it.
How is a Yucca rostrata delivered?
XXLplant ships the Yucca rostrata upright in its own plant box, with the crown in a paper sleeve and the pot secured. The largest plants go with a specialist carrier, otherwise PostNL or DHL. In frost or heat we add a heat pack or cold pack.
