Strelitzia Nicolai: The ultimate guide to location and light

The Strelitzia Nicolai , better known as the White Bird of Paradise, grows into an impressive houseplant with large, tropical leaves. But this plant has one clear preference: light, and plenty of it . This article explains the best place to place the Strelitzia and how to create ideal conditions.

Where do you place the Strelitzia Nicolai?

The location is crucial for the growth and appearance of the plant.

  • Preferably place it in a bright room with plenty of daylight.

  • The closer to a large window, the better.

  • Do take into account draughts and cold air currents, as the plant does not like these.

👉 Tip: the Strelitzia looks best in a living room with high ceilings or a bright office space.

How much light does he need?

The Strelitzia Nicolai is a real sun worshipper.

  • A few hours of direct sunlight each day will encourage the growth of new, large leaves.

  • If it is too dark, the plant will grow slowly and the leaves will become smaller and paler.

  • In summer you can even put it outside temporarily, provided it is out of the strong wind.

Please note: do not place the plant immediately in full sun, but allow it to acclimatise slowly to prevent leaf burn.

What happens if the plant is too dark?

  • Leaves become limp or hang down.

  • New shoots remain small or barely emerge.

  • Sometimes you see brown edges or yellow leaves appear.

If you see these signs, move the plant to a brighter spot.

Additional tips for the right location

  • Turn the plant a quarter turn occasionally. This way, the leaves will grow evenly toward the light.

  • Make sure the pot is large and sturdy enough. The leaves are heavy and need balance.

  • Keep the height in mind: a mature Strelitzia can grow up to 3 metres tall.
