The Caryota Mitis is known as the fishtail palm thanks to its distinctive, triangular leaves. This exotic eye-catcher creates a unique, tropical ambiance in any room. Perfect for those looking for something a little different than a standard palm.

This fishtail palm (Caryota mitis) is 250 cm tall, measured including the grow pot, and stands in a pot of ø32 cm. Several stems rise from the pot with long, doubly feathered leaves full of ragged, triangular leaflets that resemble fish tails.

At that height, it's a large houseplant for a spacious living room, a hallway with a high ceiling or an office with plenty of daylight. Place it in a bright spot, but out of direct afternoon sun. It likes warmth and humid air, so a spot by the radiator or in a draught is less suitable. Keep the potting soil evenly, lightly moist and don't let it dry out completely. Misting or showering the leaves occasionally keeps it fresh. It is delivered in the grow pot.

Plant care

Location: Bright, indirect light to partial shade; avoid direct sunlight. It thrives in dark locations, but grows best in ample light.
Water: Keep the potting soil constantly slightly moist, but avoid wet feet. Water every 5-7 days in summer, and every other week in winter. Check with your finger to see if the top layer has dried slightly before watering again.
Feeding: Feed palm tree once a month in spring and summer. Do not fertilize in winter. Never use more than the recommended amount.
Temperature: Minimum 15°C during the day, not below 7°C at night. Prefers high humidity.

Extra tips:
• Spray the foliage regularly to increase humidity and remove dust.
• Remove dead or brown leaves for a fresh look.
• Repot every 2-3 years in spring.
• Please note: brown edges on the lower leaves are normal, the plant will automatically produce new leaves.

Flowering

A Caryota mitis rarely flowers indoors. Only older palms in a very bright spot produce hanging flower clusters, and a stem that has flowered then slowly dies back while the other stems keep growing. You mainly buy this palm for its foliage. The plant is usually not in flower on delivery.
