The Phoenix Canariensis is a robust date palm with graceful fan-shaped leaves. This plant instantly adds a tropical holiday feel to your home or patio. A strong, characterful palm for large spaces.

The pygmy date palm (Phoenix roebelenii) is naturally a compact species, but this specimen, at 230 cm tall, measured including the grow pot, is a substantial palm in a pot of ø50 cm. A sturdy, rough trunk carries a full crown of finely feathered, drooping leaves.

A large indoor palm like this looks good in a spacious living room, conservatory or reception area with plenty of daylight, and outdoors in summer on a sheltered terrace too. Place it in a bright spot, with some sun if you like, and keep the soil evenly moist without wet feet. In winter, water less and keep it indoors, as it can't tolerate frost. There are sharp spines at the base of the leaf stems. Not toxic to cats and dogs.

Plant care

Location: Full sun, at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Can also tolerate partial shade, but grows best in full sun.
Water: Water regularly; keep the soil slightly moist, but avoid waterlogging. Water daily in warm summer weather, less frequently in winter (about once a week).
Feeding: Feed palm trees weekly in spring and summer. Do not fertilize in autumn and winter.
Temperature: Can tolerate short periods of frost, but protect it with fleece or bubble wrap at temperatures below -2°C. Potted palms are best brought indoors during severe frost.

Flowering

A Phoenix canariensis in a pot almost never flowers. Only old palms many metres tall produce long clusters of small yellow flowers. You buy this palm for its tropical shape and foliage.

Hoe groot wordt een Phoenix canariensis?

Planted in the ground in a warm climate, the Canary Island date palm grows very large, but in a pot it stays much more compact. It grows slowly and only forms a thick trunk after years. At XXLplant you can buy it from 140 to 230 cm tall, measured including the nursery pot.

Can a Phoenix canariensis stand outside?

Where is the best place for a Phoenix canariensis indoors?

Give it the brightest spot you have, ideally close to a large south- or west-facing window. With too little light the leaves go limp and paler in colour. Turn the pot now and then for even growth.

How often should you water a Phoenix canariensis?

Water when the top few centimetres of compost are dry, roughly once a week in summer and much less in winter. Don't leave water standing in the saucer or decorative pot, as it doesn't cope well with wet feet.

Does a Phoenix canariensis have spines?

Yes, the undersides of the leaf stalks have long, sharp spines. So do not place it right next to a walkway or where children play, and wear gloves when you move or prune it.
