The Strelitzia dossier

Strelitzia nicolai

The Strelitzia nicolai comes from the coastal forests of South Africa, where it grows into a tree-like plant many meters high. Its large, banana-like leaves catch plenty of sun and wind. Cracks in the leaves are completely natural: this way the plant allows the wind to pass through without being blown over.

Indoors, the Strelitzia grows into an impressive houseplant with a tropical appearance. It is not known as the bird of paradise plant for nothing.

Placement and light

The Strelitzia is a real sun worshiper: the more light, the better. Place it in the brightest spot in the house, preferably directly in front of a large window facing south or west. Too little light inhibits growth and makes the petioles limp.

Turn the plant a quarter turn regularly for even growth. Keep the temperature above 12 degrees; In summer it can also be placed outside in a sheltered position.

Water and feeding

Keep the potting soil slightly moist during the growing season and water about once or twice a week in the summer. In winter the soil may become drier in between. Avoid a layer of water at the bottom of the pot, because the roots do not like that.

Provide plant food every two weeks from March to September. Wipe the large leaves occasionally with a damp cloth so that they catch more light.

Is something wrong with your Strelitzia?

Brown edges usually indicate dry air or a water shortage, yellow leaves indicate too much water. Cracks in the leaves are normal and part of the plant. If the leaf curls lengthwise, the plant is thirsty. In dry air, spider mites can appear, recognizable by fine spider silk under the leaves.

Repotting and pot choice

Repot a young Strelitzia every two years in the spring; older specimens can be kept in the same pot for longer. The strong roots can literally deform a plastic nursery pot. Choose a sturdy pot that is about twenty percent wider and use nutritious, well-drained potting soil. You can find the matching decorative pots directly on this page.

Toxic to pets?

The Strelitzia is slightly poisonous to cats and dogs, especially the flowers and seeds. Chewing the plant can cause stomach complaints. Serious poisoning is rare, but it is best to keep the plant out of reach of nibbling pets or choose an animal-friendly alternative.

Growth and size

The Strelitzia is one of the fastest growers among large houseplants: in good light it produces several large leaves per year, always from the heart of the plant. Our XXL ones are years old and immediately make a tropical statement in your home.

How big does a Strelitzia nicolai grow indoors?
Indoors a Strelitzia nicolai can grow to around 2.5 to 3 metres, and it also becomes quite wide. XXLplant sells it from 70 to 250 cm tall, measured including the nursery pot. For an empty corner or a high-ceilinged room, go straight for an XXL size.
Where should you put a Strelitzia nicolai?
A Strelitzia nicolai wants lots of light, ideally a spot with at least 4 hours of direct sunlight a day. In a spot that is too dark it grows slowly and the leaves stay small. Keep it between 18 and 28 °C.
How much water does a Strelitzia nicolai need?
Water a Strelitzia nicolai roughly once a week and let the top layer of compost dry out in between. How many litres depends on the pot size and the spot; water so that the whole root ball gets moist and don't leave water standing in the decorative pot. Give less in winter.
Is a Strelitzia nicolai toxic to cats and dogs?
A Strelitzia nicolai is mildly toxic to cats and dogs. The seeds and fruit in particular can cause stomach and intestinal upsets, and the plant rarely produces these indoors. If your pet leaves the leaves alone, the risk is small.
What is the difference between a Strelitzia nicolai and a Strelitzia reginae?
The Strelitzia nicolai grows much larger, has broad banana-like leaves and produces white and blue flowers. The Strelitzia reginae stays smaller, has narrower leaves and flowers orange and blue, more often indoors too. XXLplant sells the nicolai as a large foliage plant for indoors.
Why are the leaves of my Strelitzia nicolai splitting?
Splits in the leaves of a Strelitzia nicolai are normal and part of the plant; in the wild they let the wind through. Knocks, dry air and moving it make it worse. You can cut off old or badly split leaves at the base.
How is a Strelitzia nicolai delivered?
Your Strelitzia nicolai travels upright in its own plant box, with the crown in a paper sleeve and the pot secured. The largest plants go with a specialised carrier, otherwise with PostNL or DHL, and in frost or heat we add a heat pack or cold pack. It usually arrives within 4 to 5 working days.
