Flower bulbs

Spring-flowering bulbs are planted in autumn, from October to mid-December. By then the soil has cooled down, the bulbs grow roots before winter and then flower from February into summer. Crocuses start in February and March, daffodils and tulips follow in March, April and May, and allium closes the season in May, June and July. One planting session gives you months of flowers.

For every variety you choose the number of bulbs yourself. If you only know the size of your border, use the per m² calculator: enter the area and you will see how many bulbs you need. The page turns that number into the best-value combination of bags, so you do not pay for bulbs you will not use.

Looking for one type in particular? Have a look at our tulip bulbs or daffodil bulbs. For a natural look there are also mixes for sunny, dry, damp or shady gardens.

Frequently asked questions

When should you plant flower bulbs?
Spring-flowering bulbs such as tulips, daffodils and crocuses are planted in autumn, from October to mid-December. The soil should have cooled down but not yet be frozen. The bulbs need a cold period to flower in spring.
How deep should you plant flower bulbs?
A rule of thumb is two to three times the height of the bulb. Small bulbs such as crocuses go about 5 to 8 centimetres deep, tulips and daffodils 10 to 15 centimetres. Plant them pointed end up and lightly firm the soil afterwards.
How many flower bulbs do you need per m²?
That depends on the variety. Small bulbs such as crocuses are planted close together, large alliums much further apart. The per m² calculator on the product page shows how many bulbs you need for each variety, and the page puts together the best-value bags.
Where is the best place to plant flower bulbs?
Most spring bulbs like sun and free-draining soil, as they rot in wet ground. They also do well in pots and containers with a drainage hole. For shady spots or damp soil there are separate mixes.
