Frequently asked questions

Which plants are suitable for a balcony?
Choose potted plants that match the amount of sun and wind on your balcony. Lavender, ornamental grasses, Japanese maples, box, Fargesia, palms and olive trees are all options. Use a stable pot with drainage holes and allow for the space the plant will take up as it grows.
Which patio plants are hardy?
Japanese maples, many ornamental grasses, lavender, Heuchera, Fargesia and some palms can stay outdoors in winter. Roots are more vulnerable to frost in a pot than in the ground. Put the pot in a sheltered place and protect the root ball during severe frost.
Can olive and citrus trees stay outdoors?
An olive tree can tolerate light frost in a sheltered spot, but needs protection in severe frost. Citrus is more tender and is best overwintered frost-free in a light place. Water sparingly in winter, but do not allow the root ball to dry out completely.
How large should a pot for patio plants be?
Choose a pot that is clearly larger than the nursery pot and has holes in the base. The larger the plant, the more important stability and root space become. A generous pot also retains moisture for longer than a small one.
How do you care for plants on a sunny patio?
Check regularly in warm weather whether the compost is dry, as pots heat up quickly. Water at the root ball rather than only over the leaves. A layer of mulch on the compost reduces evaporation. Put plants that tolerate less sun in afternoon shade.
