Buying Scandinavian plants, light and serene green

Which plants suit Scandinavian living

Scandinavian living is light and simple: white walls, oak or birch, wool and linen, and few belongings. Plants bring colour and life into that. Choose species with bright green leaves and an open growth habit, so the room stays light. In this collection you will find:

  • Ficus lyrata, the fiddle leaf fig: large, wavy leaves, from an 80 cm bush to a 270 cm tree.
  • Strelitzia nicolai and Strelitzia augusta: large, paddle-shaped leaves, up to 250 cm.
  • Palms: the Kentia up to 260 cm, the parlour palm (Chamaedorea) and the fishtail palm, airy and light.
  • Polyscias (aralia) of 90 to 100 cm, with small, fine leaves for a cabinet or low table.
  • Monstera, Ficus elastica and sansevieria for a bit more contrast.

Spots and pots

Put a Ficus lyrata or Strelitzia next to the sofa, at an angle in front of a large window, so it gets plenty of light. Fill an empty corner in a white living room with a Kentia or a Ficus lyrata on a stem. A Polyscias looks good on a desk or sideboard. A parlour palm or Kentia works in the bedroom, as they cope with less light. Want to go big in one go? There is a value bundle with a 200 cm Kentia, a 225 cm Strelitzia nicolai and a 200 cm Areca. You will find more large specimens among the XXL plants.

Scandinavian style suits matt pots in white, light grey or sand, light terrazzo and pale wood. A natural woven basket works too, as long as the shape stays simple. Keep the colour and material of the pots around the house consistent, so the look stays calm. Your plant comes in a nursery pot, and you choose the decorative pot separately. Read more about the style in Scandinavian interior style.

Light and care

Ficus lyrata and Strelitzia want lots of indirect light, close to a large window. Try not to move a Ficus lyrata too often, as it may drop leaves. There is more on that in the Ficus care guide. The Kentia palm and the parlour palm can stand further from the window. Water when the top layer of soil feels dry and do not leave water in the pot. Wipe large leaves with a damp cloth now and then, so they stay clean and catch more light.

Delivery

In the Netherlands your plant arrives within 4 to 5 working days, upright in a sturdy plant box. Delivery in the Netherlands is free from €99. If anything is damaged in transit, send us a photo and we will send a new plant free of charge. We measure height from the bottom of the pot to the tallest leaf.

Frequently asked questions

Which plants suit a Scandinavian interior?
Plants with bright green leaves and a calm, open shape work best. Think of a Ficus lyrata, a Strelitzia, a Kentia palm or a Polyscias. Go for a few larger plants rather than lots of small pots, so the room stays light and uncluttered.
Which pot suits a Scandinavian interior?
Matt pots in white, light grey or sand work best, as do light terrazzo, pale wood or a natural basket with a simple shape. Keep the pots around the house in the same tone. The plant comes in a nursery pot, so you choose the decorative pot separately.
Which large plant suits a bright living room?
In a bright living room, Ficus lyrata and Strelitzia nicolai grow best, both with large leaves that need a lot of light. Here they are available up to 270 and 250 cm tall. Put them close to a large window, without harsh midday sun on the leaves.
Which Scandinavian plant copes with low light?
The Kentia palm and the parlour palm (Chamaedorea) cope with less light than most houseplants. That makes them a good fit for a bedroom or a corner further from the window. A sansevieria can also stand in a less bright spot.
How do you style plants in a Scandinavian living room?
Give one or two large plants their own spot, for example next to the sofa or in an empty corner, and keep the rest of the room calm. Combine them with light wood, wool and linen. A smaller plant on a sideboard or desk completes the picture.
Which plants work in a Scandinavian interior?
Choose plants with a clean, graphic silhouette and a calm look. Ficus lyrata, sansevieria, Strelitzia and quiet leafy plants are classics. Stick to a few larger specimens rather than many small ones.
How many plants suit Scandinavian minimalism?
Less is more. Work with a few carefully placed plants and give them space. Two to three large plants in a room keep the look calm and tidy.
Which pots suit a Scandinavian style?
Choose neutral or white pots in plain, matt tones. They match the light palette and let the green of your plant stand out softly without adding clutter.
How much light do Scandinavian plants need?
Most plants in this style love lots of indirect light, which suits bright Scandinavian rooms well. Place a plant by a window, but out of the harsh midday sun.
How do I keep a Scandinavian plant healthy indoors?
Water as soon as the top layer of soil is dry, put the plant in a bright spot and keep it away from cold draughts and heat sources. Calm, sturdy species need little maintenance.
